i have ever paid to see in my life
to see them a few weeks back and i thought that they were okay, however, the chalets who were supporting were better by a country mile.
but I don't mind the Research, they have some decent poppy songs.
Not bad live as well, they make you happy.
one of the girls from the chalets
But the album is actually good fun.
but now I think I loathe it. His voice is weak, the lo-fi music twinned with the loser-at-school lyrics just adds to the nasty recipe.
Over-twee, unsettling, style over substance.
I was shocked to see they were on EMI.
in barfly supporting someone and they were a joke, nothing special. i picked up their album from work weeks ago, and still can't be bothered to have a listen.
for once i actually TOTALLY agree with you wrighty.
Too much sugar is bad for you.
Good warm-hearted pop tunes, sweet live show.
They won't change your life, but they'll warm your cockles for about half an hour or so.
about 6 times. I tried so hard to like it. It is waaaaaaaaaaaaaay too twee. I almost want to vomit at the thought of playingit again.
..i usually like twee crap.
But this band are terrible.
After seeing them live, I realised that I had been singing along to every to song in my head. Which made me realise the quality of the songwriting. It's high. Consistent. Consistently good indie-pop music. I reckon. Yes though, twee as fuck. Abject twee. Cloying. Not my favourite band. At all. But good.
you have to be in the right state of mind to listen to them.
Today, I won't even try...
...weeks later I still have, "its not that i dont love you...." going around my head.
But, then again, I still get Leave Right Now stuck in my head, and it doesnt mean that's ace.
Although that is ace. So you might be right...
Leave Right Now is ace.
the album off you. Haven't got it yet. But love the Research. Seen them more times than I can count on my hands and toes. They're great and the nicest people in pop.
They make me happy. The songs are funny. They have 2 pretty girls and a pretty boy, a kiddie sized drum kit and a bashed up casio. What's not to like?
and my music taste is decidedly uncool.
or an occassional piece of radio play. it would probably kill me to listen to all the album in one go as it is very samey. that doesn't mean that they are bad. just good in a different context, and yes the chalets are better.
they're plain terrible. I think the phrase "don't mistake lack of talent for genius" applies here.
playing a cheap casio keyboard onstage. gone are the days when you need a shed of talent to get anywhere in the music business. it all about being quirky now.
There's a question apllied to everything about your post. Your idea of 'talent'. Your dismissal of 'quirky'. Your reference to music as 'the music business'.
Where to be begin, really.
It'll all end in tears.
Nanemly, that being "quirky" isnt an excuse for being rubbish.
Nothing wrong with cheap casio keyboards in general though :)
i meant, namely, obiously.
But nanemly has a nice ring to it. Like it should be some cute little town in Norfolk or something...
we found a town called Giggleswick the other day - CUTE.
yeah, i think the time we went to see them they would have been okay except that The Lodger were supporting them, who were like, far better. i think that spoiled it a bit. Otherwise, i find the lyrics a bit cringeworthy "i love you but i'm scared i'll fuck it up...i love you but i'm scared i'll fuck it up....etc etc etc etc ad infinitum"
eurgh. sorry, but eurgh.
..they're not rubbish. "I love you... but" is fantastic. They have talent for writing catchy songs, and really are not that quirky. It's just fun pop music.
they're like a sugar sandwich. sadly i don't mean chris budget's friends.
but it'd be really nice, but you'd get rotten teeth if you ate too many.
so! listen to the research! but in moderation, and then listen to morrissey to take the happiness out of you. maybe some depeche mode would depress adequately.
if you like it, fair enough. you must be seeing something i don't.
Yes. All about balance. Listen to The Reserach and the Pipettes then go listen to the TVPs and Mary Chain. Finally throw in a bit of Milk Kan and Filthy Pedro with a dash of AWWBLOT. Then your life will be as rosey and great as mine.
Where they go from here. You can only do the quirky, amateurism for so long.
I've been an amateur for 27 years now. It was said I had quirky teeth once too.
record they are contrived and twee. in a live situation they are merely poor - harmonies that are woefully out of tune and musicianship that could be bettered by schoolboys.
balh blah blah blah.
as i said above, have a little listen then listen to something else. it's all about contrast.
