the_authority [Edit] [Delete] 41 replies 01:21, 26 February '06

i want to write it off because the smiths were the only truly decent act in the entire decade. i'm glad i was only a nipper at that time.

i've seen that abomination of a video of you prancing around on a catwalk trying to act and trying to sing.

          • A reasonable conclusion to make from a 5 minute window into my life

            however
            I'm an able biped

            and
you might do better to look (or rather listen) a little more closely to long list of artists on this thread that easily counter your argument than shouting from your corner

and besides - that performance had nothing 80s about it, rather more 90s I'd say...

why do people who wernt active in an era comment on it. i wasnt around in the 60s so ill leave it to those who were to inform. to conclude your a pratt at best who skimming an iceberg when most of what you dont know lies underneath your broken radar

In that case, the majority of us can't discuss anything pre-1990? Fuck that. Just because I wasn't born in the 80s doesnt mean I can't say Sparks were semen.

      • .

I think I more or less agree.

But I'm getting into more and more 80's stuff recently. Daydream Nation's becoming my new favourite album, getting into Gang of Four, and the Smiths and the Cure were good.

But you're right. 10 years and only a few bands to show for it. Most stuff from the 80s sounds much more dated than stuff from 60's, 70's and 90's.

        wrightylew | 26 Feb '06, 16:20 | X
        • .

          I don't think the 90s or 70s were better than the 80s.

Why does society feel the need to categorise things by date? It has no relevance at all to music.

          Thom_fa @wrightylew | 26 Feb '06, 16:33 | X
          • date obviously will affect the type of music

but i think categorising music by the decade is stupid as it isn't as simple as that, now is it?

      • !

Since Ian Curtis died early on in the 1980s makes it fair to say they were more of a late 70s band, anyway, the 80s did have alot of sh'te passing through it...

        IranDIS @tom_damo_suzuki | 26 Feb '06, 21:43 | X
        • as did

the 90's... and so far, this decade's had more than it's fair share of shite, and we're only halfway through.

          kovacs @IranDIS | 26 Feb '06, 21:47 | X
        • It's being selective to

try and prove your point though. I could say the 90's were shite because all they had were Westlife, A1, Upside Down, 2wo 3hirds, Celine Dion, Simply Red etc.

It's fucking stupid. There were good bits and bad bits, and you can't describe an entire decade as shit. Unless you spent ten years hooked on smack eating roofing tiles and trying to mount your Aunt's chihuahua.

          alcxxk | 27 Feb '06, 03:24 | X
        • Hmm

Well I loathed growing up in the 80s and I loathe the stuff that is associated with it.

All the good stuff wasn't remotely popular, whereas you can at least expect people to know about Nirvana, Blur, Radiohead, Portishead, Massive Attack, etc. etc. In short, 90s makes the 80s look worse simply by having the decent shit high profile when people who don't think too hard look back on it.

For fashion and aesthetic alone the 80s should be cast into a big pit of despair (and those who ape it now).

The main reason so much music sounds dodgy from the 80s was the terrible production ethics that went on. If you produce all drums to sound like a Simmonds kit don't be surprised if 10-20 years down the line you've ruined your chance of giving that song the impact it could have had in another decade.
