Where do I start with Mark Lanegan?

therapyrock [Edit] [Delete] 9 replies 19:18, 23 February '06

The Screaming trees?
The Mark Lanegan band?
Or Isobel Campbell and Mark Lanegan?

I've only ever heard him with QOTSA, and he has a fantastic voice.

Any reccomedations?

By just mark lanegan is his best solo stuff i think.

Dust by screaming trees is their best.

IC and ML is very good. The sweetness and gruffness mix works a treat.

Bubblegum by the mark lanegan band is also great.

I'd say his QOTSA work is his weakest

'Whiskey For The Holy Ghost' is a really good Lanegan solo album, very Cohen-esque in places.

Screaming Trees-wise, i'd go for 'Sweet Oblivion'.

It depends what you want though, if you want to hear his more introspective side then go for the solo records, for grungy psychedelia then pick the 'Trees albums.

    • I've got Dust by ver Trees, which I gather many people regard as their 'masterpiece'. I wouldn't go that far but would still heartily recommend it.

Solo material wise I have Scraps at Midnight which I would also recommend if only for 'Praying Ground'. Usually when somebody sings a line like 'not feeling any pain' my psuedo-angst-indie-cliche detector gives a reading off the dial, but you know Lanegan means it, maaaaaaan.

  • Ok cheers everyone

I'm going to check out 'Dust', the one with Isobel Campbell and 'whiskey for the holy ghost'.

    Thanks!

  • Yep,

Sweet Oblivion and Dust are the best 'trees albums.

    • I've

been a Lanegan fan since Sweet Oblivion and would agree he has one of the best voices in rock. I have come to appreciate his quieter side and would recommend "whiskey for the holy ghost" as his best work. It's unbelievable, it took me years of owning the album and maturing from boy to man before I really got it, but you simply MUST read the lyrics as they take it to another level.

  • hmm

i'll agree on dust, but i'd say The Winding Sheet is his best solo record. contains his cover of Where Did you Sleep Last Night? that nirvana ripped off the arrangement for for their unplugged show...and it's generally tremendous.

  • I would never recommend 'starting' with Mark Lanegan. Don't even make eye contact.
