He sounded cool tonight. Any albums reccomended?
Well worth checking out, Toots actually coined the term "reggae" (though he spelt it "reggay"). He's still going with a version of the Maytals, played Glastonbury a couple of years ago and he was my festival highlight. You can get a best of for about 3 quid in Fopp, well worth the investment!
I think he spelt it "reggay"...
*shoots off to find album*
considering jamaican culture's general position on homosexuality, its no suprise they changed the name.
Pressure Drop is one of the best reggae songs ever written IMO.
Toots & The Maytals.
One of the greatest bands ever. Top 5 I'd say.
If you want a good Maytals investment, go for the Roots Reggae boxset, 6 awesome awesome cds for about £20, I promise you it's a bargin, the only great Maytals album the box set doesn't have is the very first album for which they couldn't get the producer to let them do it (still available separetly though).
If you want to check out some tracks though, top 5 Maytals tracks:
1. Monkey Man
2. Pressure Drop
3. 54-64 That's My Number
4. Daddy (Sensational Maytals version)
5. I Shall Be Free
= amazing, and you can get like the entire back catalogue for about 50p because reggae isn't HOTT any more.
Funky Kingston should definitely be added to that list, yes it should
You can also get a live accoustic cd he did for the Katrina benefit last year for a few quid on ebay, he did Time Touch, Pressue, Monkey Man and 54-46. Great cd...
Toots Live! It's one of the great live albums.
is one of the most glorious, uplifting songs ever written. Amazingly so when you consider it was written about the time he was stitched up and sent to prison for a crime he didn't commit. If there ever was an all-conquering example of taking something awful and turning it into an absolute celebration, that song is it.
"Give it to me... one time!" *BA!*
I like Pressure Drop.
I will get an album...
I was fairly drunk and asked friend if they knew who music was, and the guy behind injerjected Toots Maytal.
He was half right...
Toots is the daddy.
According to him, 54-46 wise, he was "stiched up", as they say, because his group had had 13 number one hits in Jamaica and other wanted him out the way.
So he write that and got himself another hit, ooh sweet irony.
I find it shocking though that, specially in a place like Jamaica, you'd would have gotten 12 months for possesion of canabis...the stereotypes are possibly on me here.
Give to me...two time! *BA BA*
*BA BA BA BA BA BA BA BA BA BA BA BA BA BA BA BA BA*
(Yeah, i know, it doesn't do that...)
