will the rise of the Arctic Monkeys mark the end of Britpop 2 ?
The same way that the rise of Oasis started the end of Britpop ?
And if so what will be big next ?
If AM are the new Oasis who will be :
1. the credible and successful bands ( like Blur, Suede, Pulp...)
2. the one successful album and then mocked bands ( like Elastica, Sleeper, Echobelly...)
3. the top40 singles and treading the same venue thanks to a small army of devotees bands ( like Gene, Shed seven the Bluetones...)
4. the Johnny come lately that will failed, get dropped and split ( like Elcka, Perfume, Bawl...) ?
i forgot...
my vote :
1. Franz Ferdinand
2. Kaiser Chiefs, Hard-Fi, Dead 60s
3. the Futureheads, Maximo Park
4. Boy Kill Boy, Bromheads Jacket, the Kooks
i think...
1. Bloc Party, Maximo Park
2. Kaisers, Arctic Monkeys, Hard Fi (if you can call their shitty album 'succesful')
3. The Rakes, Babyshambles/Doherty (when the fuss dies down)
4. too many to list... The Paddingtons? The Kooks?
I'd like to think
the earth isn't this predictable and repetetive.
the might not be
but indie rock trends probably are
Ok then
1) Bloc Party
2) Kaiser Chiefs
3) Babyshambles
4) The Kooks
2 bands for each
1. Bloc Party, Maximo Park
2. Kaiser Cheifs, Arctic Monkeys
3. Forward Russia, The Rakes
4. 65daysofstatic, Boy Kill Boy
sorry
but thats what i think will happen to 65dos even though they are probably the best band on the list
this thread
is genius, lyle. i'll have to give it some thought.
'this thread is genius'
must be a first coming from me...
it really is a very good thread idea
thanks
i'm happy now...
what are 65 even doing on this list?
last time i checked, they weren't britpop!
they also operate on an indie label
and thus are unlikely to "get dropped".
Not sure whether this can be compared to the original Britpop era in terms of impact but...
here goes:
1)Bloc Party, Futureheads, Maximo Park, Libertines,
2) Editors, Kaiser Chiefs, The Darkness (if they count)
3)The Ordinary Boys once the CBB fuss has died down, Babyshambles, The Rakes etc.
4)The Kooks, Towers of London and plenty of other bands we haven't heard of yet.
haha
what a cunt.
hmmm
Do 65DOS really fit with the whole britpop idea?
Besides they're fantastic
hard-fi??!!
you'd put hard-fi's album under 'credible'?! I'd put them and dead 60s under:
5) twatty twat bands that can piss off and die
.
god indie fans are so cynical.
It'll be theories like this that'll turn the charts back into 'chirpy chirpy cheep cheep mk 4' and 'mr blobby pt 2'
Arctic Monkeys are good, a successful indie band, yay! take that Cowell!
makes perfect sense to me
mr fuckign timewarp!
.
eh?
I
have thought about this and I hope it's not the case. I don't want such a brilliant music scene to go and fuck off as soon as I get to uni.
Stop scaring me Lyle.
wasn't my intention...
but not all of these bands will survive or stay successful. But i think some will.
Look at what happen to the Kenickie/ Symposium/Seafood/A/Midget/Cable... generation of bands...
I
know exactly where you're coming from.
Ages back I made a big topic implying the same thing. I kind of went off on one about how other musical periods were shit and retook the position of Drowned in Sound Public Enemy No.1 again.
i wasn't saying that a period was bad
just that the public changes taste fast.
Sometimes some of the new bands stay.
Sometimes none of them stay.
It has nothing to do with quality.
I
know. I was just explaining.
You're really hard to get things through to. Why do I try?
maybe
you're not very good at explaining ?
Maybe i'm trying to rile you.
Why do you try anyway ?
'A' did OK until their record company stiffed them
... and Kenickie's demise was personal rather than a case of "that's showbusiness"...
you're right
But they never made it as big as the Britpop bands or the current bands.
oh you do
you can be cool and embittered and retro.
by the time you reach uni
you'll probably have moved on with your tastes and be far less bothered about what the scene is like. even whilst the general scene is shite, there will still be amazing records being released, and old ones to go back to.
by the time Wrightylew reaches uni
we'll be back round to guitar music being 'in' again after a few rounds of novelty acts in plastic suits, glam rock, and gangster rap-indie pop fusion.
Gagnster Rap - Indie Pop Fusion
MAKE IT HAPPEN
but in which way?
twee tunes with lyrics about shooting people and dealing drugs, or g funk with lyrics about girls named jane?
twee tunes with lyrics of killing people
i want that !
twee tunes with lyrics about killing people?
"But if I kill him now, who's going to miss him?"
B&S - I Could Be Dreaming
...or is your need for something more explicit? ;-)
more explicit
would be better.
Like the Texas Chainsaw Massacre with a score by Aberfeldy or Heavenly...
haha...Heavenly... that would do nicely
...another band missed :-(
but she's still doing great music
try to find the new Tendertrap EP !
It's ace !
.
i was thinking more a run-dmc aerosmith switching between styles, just think how much Bearsuit could add to Hey Charlie hey chuck with a gangster rap from Notorious B.I.G.
I'll bite...
1. Bloc Party (Radiohead) Maximo park (Pulp)
2. Razorlight, Kasabian
3.The Zutons, Keane
4. The Kooks
Although I'm not even sure if the Arctic monkeys will achieve Oasis level of stardom, i honestly believe that they'll do what the darkness did & have all this popular hype behind them, which will then just fall away by the time of the 2nd/3rd album. They'll be big for while, but They won't last as long as Oasis have (thank god). I reckon FF will be the ones to go onto the megastar level...
What about...
5. First new version of Noelrock bands eg. New Ocean Colour Scene, Cast etc.
In this case the first band that can be classified as "Alexrock" if we want to draw parallels can be found right here.

weren't Milburn
doing music before the AM ?
Well...
I wasn't actually sure to be honest but it kinda looks like they are going to get reasonably successful due to being the buddies of the Arctic Monkeys.
significantly so, yes.
;
My first thought when I heard the Arctic Monkeys was, "Oh, they sound a bit like Milburn."
