From initial listens is a slight dissapointment, Only a 3 or 4 standout great tracks. However 'I hate pretending' is a contender for the best secret machines song produced by the American trio. 'Alone jealous and stoned' is fantastic, but it sounds better on my 12" single for some reason.
3 or 4 tracks on the album are virtually lifeless, devoid of any charm and emotion, and unfortunately they are lacklusture compared to 'Now here is nowhere'. Anyone looking for another 'First wave intact' will be bitterly dissapointed. Most of the songs seem to go nowhere on initial listens.
'Lighning Blue Eyes' is a great song, one of the album highlights.
The album is typical of the secret machines, its instantly recognisable, but it does seem like most of the songs sound like b-sides off 'Now here is nowhere'.
Newbies to secret machines should check them out, they may be pleasantly surprised by the originality of the music. But for those of us that have heard their fantastic debut, you might be dissapointed.
