Lyle? Not a word...!
aaah scopitones is magnificent. Have you made the (somehow) related journey to http://bedazzled.blogs.com/bedazzled/ ?
That's got more great stuff on it...the electric prunes jamming with agent 99 from 'get smart'...for example
will appreciate these links.
do a list of stuff to investigate for a lazy 60s French Pop virgin? please :)
Annie Philippe's track C'est La Mode is fucking amazing...as is on ma toujours dit(?) M. Polnareffs album 'polnareffs' is great, though less sixties pop and more library style stuff, his earlier singles are well worth hunting down- I like the track 'time will tell'.
Francoise Hardy sings in english is a great album.
i shall have a search
The best french pop stuff is often Gainsbourg-related (anything by Serge himself of course, plus Jacques Dutronc, France Gall, Bardot et al), but there are some other great artists too (usually influenced by the Gainsbourg stuff). I'd say the appeal of French 60s stuff comes from the quirky song-writing and imaginative production rather than (necessarily) any great musical talents.Although Nino Ferrer is a great French RnB singer and Dutronc's voice is pretty good. Never really got into Polnareff- bit too rocky!
Course, Brel and Aznavour are truly great singers.
The "Pop A Paris" Comps are pretty good overall, but they have included some crap fillers, sadly.
this is a good list from amazon.com
Last CD I got was this which I ordered from Amazon.fr. It's great!
Goya is in JL Godard's "Masculin Feminin" if anone's seen it...
Grockle - Have you heard any Brigitte Fontaine? She did an album with Jean Claude Vannier (arranged Melody Nelson) I want to hear...
haven't found anything on the webs or on ebay with that song about a vampire by Stella. Gah!
don't recall any Brigette Fontaine, but I may have a track on cassette..to be honest I'm painfully unaware of Serge Gainsbourg too...my chick has a lot, I'll have to listen to some
That's all I can say. Just get Ballade de Melody Nelson and prepare to become an addict...
cool, will do.
by the way, perhaps you'd like some later Polnareff...I've got a track from '71 that's brilliant- less rocky, a bit like a funkier Beach Boys...
