please. I seem to have finally 'got' them after about 9 years - still that's the joy of being alive really
a friend the other day. They said The Great Destroyer, (not sure if that is the correct name)
and also the xmas album which I have heard and enjoyed. I must be mellowing out
Double Nickels On The Dime for The Minutemen. Fantastic double album with musical styles all over the place. Genius.
For Husker Du, New Day Rising and Flip Your Wig are both ace, quite poppy (as HD go). Generally, the faster, more hardcore stuff came at the start of their career.
thewarn is a good resource for this type of thing, he's probably the man to talk to. Hope this helps though!
he knows his SST shit. Double Nickels is indeed the best place to start with the minutemen. Accessible but like nothing you've heard before and utterly unimpeachable. What makes a man start fires is the one to work up to - their edgiest and possibly best album.
My favourite work of their's is actually 'Buzz or howl under the influence of heat' but it's an EP, and only about 15 minutes long (15 minutes of utter perfection).
on the Dirty Three collaboration is one of my favourite three songs ever. It really is that good. It is so beautiful.
if you want. It's fantastic.
because it has the song words on it which is great.
Long Division or Great Distroyer, One is slow, one is fast(er-ish).
...I was thinking about this on the way home last night but for some reason failed to bring it with me today.
then Curtain Hits the Cast
Then the new one
then things we lost
then some other ones by them...
Trust, the Things We Lost in the Fire, then The Great Destroyer.
I don't actually have the earlier albums - I'm not as committed as I should be...
And i say : I COULD LIVE IN HOPE !
not literally (unfortunately ;) )
I COULD LIVE IN HOPE
it's sooooo depressing.
And i never found this album depressing !
we could discuss why i find Low really, well, low.
I suppose the album could be uplifting if you feel really really shitty (ie the title) but it really is very moody and stuff.
did you ever check out Gravenhurst? I absolutely adore the last LP.
Many things to buy and it's a bit pricey...
Definitely will when i got some money and a slow week...
when i was feeling really really really shitty.
But i still find it uplifting now that i'm happy...
the new album is far more krautrock and less slow-core than the older ones, but i love my krautrock.
don't you also find "Faith" by The Cure uplifting though lyle? i think we have different definitions of the word... :/
Gravenhurst is always about murder and death though, so NO WORRIES.
Faith is depressing !
But in a good way...
I was actually listening to The Great Destroyer about half an hour ago when i went out to get some milk and tabs. Hadn't seen this thread before that, but it's a great album and got me into the back catalogue too.
low are probably the most uplifting band i've ever heard.
i recommend 'things we lost...' as a starting point - it's easier to listen to (but not necessarily better than) the early stuff but less poppy than the new stuff.
for me. But that was the first one I heard. Secret Name is probably the one to start with though - it is well produced and has some of the best songs on.
