Test Icicles / HSCS / Damn Arms - last night.

marcofella [Edit] [Delete] 30 replies 09:19, 17 January '06

I went to this gig last night in Newcastle. It isn't often that I go to a gig and ALL three bands are pretty good.

Test Icicles - I was a little disappointed with the PA during their set. It simply wasn’t loud enough. Quite a few people were heard shouting at the sound guy to ‘turn it up’. Nevertheless they put up a pretty good performance on the night, and can I single out the ‘pink guitar’ wielding member for high praise. He was an incredible showman, and a seemingly amazing guitarist. I only wish it had been loud enough as it had very little impact.

Help She Can’t Swim – I thought these guys were pretty good. I went there hoping for something special after everyone on DiS had said they were pretty ACE. Although it didn’t knock me out, it made me want to search out an album/EP. They seemed like they were having a lot of fun on stage and this had a similar effect on the watching audience. Lots of fun.

Damn Arms – Mistook these for HSCS at first (I didn’t realise there was three bands on). Anyway, WOW!! Has anybody else heard these guys? They are from Australia (Bangbang?) and I believe this is their first visit to the UK. They totally blew me away and were by far the best band on the night. Very energetic and extremely loud, disco/guitar noise. If you get a chance, check these guys out.

Test Icicles – 6/10
HSCS – 7/10
Damn Arms – 8/10

    • You are in for a treat

they were pretty bloody ACE. For their final track the 'pink guitar weilding' member of Test Icicles joins them on keyboards. It went totally RAWK and mental.

Are you seeing them in support of Test Icicles Mike?

      • nah

They're headlining the Metro with October All Over and Comanechi.

  • i'm so very confused

i really liked Test-Icicles when they first started out as i thought they were a british version of bands like The Mae-Shi who would have a small following and a short lifespan and put out loads of 7"s of lo-fi throwaway punk records - like "Dancing on Pegs".

When i saw them in February they were a great laugh, despite plainly having about 5 songs.

Then their record deal kicked in and they got overproduced and faaaaaar too popular for what they were/are, and so they come across as a joke band rather than a fun band. Why on Earth have they become so successful when bands like Coachwhips and The Mae Shi sell fuck all?

    • The Mae-Shi
