Eels

stevierob [Edit] [Delete] 20 replies 15:41, 9 December '05

I've had Eels - Blinking Lights... album on my ipod for months, but have only just started listening to it, cos of a backlog of other new music i was listening to.

Played it about 6 times now, over the last couple of days and now consider it a work of genius. Does anybody agree?

  • I found it disappointing

A handful of excellent songs but lots of similar-sounding filler tracks and throwaway instrumentals. It's the only Eels album I have so I can't really compare it with anything previous.

    • Why is it the only Eels album you have!?

I agree about BLinking Lights, what I'm gonna do is pick 12 great tracks and just make it into one loverly album.

Get Daisies Of The Galaxy and Electro Shock Blues...

      • I love it

it's my favourite Eels album. Absolutely beautiful, especially If You See Natalie, Railroad Man and Soy Bomb.

        • ooh

and I saw them play most of this, with strings, in the Albert Hall. Lovely lovely lovely.

          • i was there too

and i saw them at the queen elizabeth hall in june.

much better setlist on the second one. 'packing blankets' is just one of my favourite songs ever ever ever and when they played it second (they didn't back in june) i nearly cried big emo tears.

            i love E.

        • I'm only missing...

...Shootenanny. How does that compare to the other albums?

          Damian @OceanStorm | 9 Dec '05, 17:38 | X
          • I reckon

it has some great songs but overall is not as good. Bit o filler. Same for Blinking Lights, but in that case lots of filler.

The first four albums are gold though. By Shootenanny he's singing the same melodies, same chord sequences and the same basslines as before and that gets on me wick.

            • Halfway through it

becomes the happiest album ever! Well sort of. There is definitely a turning point. Last stop: this town.

              • Bits of it are very good,

But it seems somehow less than a lot of the other stuff I've heard. It's very personal, and I might just not respond so much to that kinda thing

              • Oh What a Beautiful Morning!!!

They did a live CD in the states when they were touring 'Daisies of the Galaxy' it's got the best version of 'Not Ready Yet' that I've ever heard.

                The_Dave @guntrip | 12 Dec '05, 13:50 | X
                • that's a lovely CD, that is

especially love the middle section - fucker / ant farm / climbing to the moon / grace kelly blues / daises of the galaxy - absolutely spot on versions of all of them.

if you don't have it, the "sixteen tons" live CD they've been selling recently is well worth it as well, wonderful versions of packing blankets and last stop: this town on it.

            • yes

But then I think all eels albums are genius. Shootenanny! is definitely up there for me, so yes you should buy it...

              Slicky | 12 Dec '05, 10:01 | X
              • I like Blinking Lights

but I think there is just too much filler which spoils it for me (as opposed to something like Illinois where I enjoy every track). I also have Daisies but I haven't actually got round to listening to it yet ...

                • Eels

first three albums are three of the most consistently brilliant albums i've ever heard, not implying the other albums are bad

                  moribund @Dill | 12 Dec '05, 10:41 | X
                  • It's all about Souljacker

It really is. I love that album a little too much.
