"Legends"

wrightylew [Edit] [Delete] 80 replies 23:21, 28 November '05

What so-called 'Legends' of indie do you find a bit crap?

Pixies - 5 excellent songs, the rest either crap or boring.

Kraftwerk - Nasty and horrible.

Talking Heads - Pretentious, up-itself tuneless drivell. Tremendously loved by Virgin Radio.

Save the "bla bla, you like the Vines... you'll like TH when you're a big boy etc...", because I probably won't.

Also, does ANYONE else agree with me on these bands?

      • I wouldn't say shite

but the velvet underground don't really do anything for me, I like bits of them but 90% of the time I'm just awashed with meh.

I quite like talking heads BUT Devo > Talking Heads. Everytime.

Kraftwerk aren't really indie but I guess you just mean seminal nands/artists or whatever.

I LOVE the cure, well, I LOVE the stuff up until the end of 1989. They haven't written 1 good song since the 80's, in my opinion obviously, but they made enough good stuff in the 80's to eclipse all of the shite.

And 'The Walk' is one of my favourite songs ever.

So I've never persued it beyond the singles. So I could well haver heard 89 onwards. Might do some back catalogue dipping at some point. I quite like being the token cure hater on here though...

                and The Fall.

I've never quite understood why nonsense-poem lyrics and the occasional feedback meltdown are enough for a band to qualify as "clever" (whatever that means anyway). Again, I wouldn't call them shite... I just don't see what the fuss is about.

The Pixies, on the other hand are GENIUS

say that Pet Shop Boys are a better band than Joy Division. And I mean it.

Most of these bands I 'don't mind', but am not a massive fan of. But then I wasn't generally around 'at the time' for most of them, which probably would have made a bit of difference.

                      Love Pixies though. LOVELOVELOVE.

I didn't get the white stripes and then I saw them live and I understood them so so much better. Just got over my dislike of The Pixies though I'll never be a fan. Surfer Rosa played in its entirety didn't push too many buttons.

I'd say I've tried a little with Nick Cave and need more time.

                        I'll never understand Animal Collective.

                    • aw...

you know I love you wrighty but I love Talking Heads more.

and really don't see your criticisms of them as being true. except possibly for 'pretentious' but then I never really see that as a bad thing.

Talking Heads to me are fun, they're funny/witty playful, happy music. The lyrics are satirical and supposed be dryly funny, not deep and meaningful and profound. They're like radiohead with a party in their pants. Sure David Byrne might have started releasing CD-Roms about architecture instead of albums but... aw never mind.

last ditch attempt if you're interested in giving them another go. watch Stop Making Sense - all the way through, on your own, with an open mind. and look at it as 'they were having fun and messing around with ideas' rather than 'they were making an artistic statement'.

and from one die-hard Joy Division fan to another I don't think 'tuneless' and 'pretentious' can be used as criticisms.

PS I like the first vines album a lot.

I find melody in JD, just over longer periods of bars, rather than melodic riffs.

Also, from what I've read or watched on Joy Division, they seem pretty... unpretentious. I mean... take the video for the TH song that says 'And You may ask yourself...'. Fair enough, its a bit of fun, but its so irritating to see him jerk around and SPEAK.

I think the speaking maybe a large part of why I dislike them.

agreed on the clash, agreed on the pixies, and kraftwerk irritate me. and sir al of cxxk is quite right about the who. they are pants.

                              • fair enough. just JD aren't exactly the Vines when it comes to being poptastic.

And as for talking heads 'talking', there are very few songs where he does that (although to be fair they're some of my favourites).

Maybe you'd prefer some earlier talking heads. like the '77' or 'buildings and food' stuff.

download 'psycho killer' and 'don't worry about the government'. then maybe 'found a job' and 'i'm not in love'. or download the greatest hits cd from somewhere. maybe the later funk-driven stuff might not be your thing. but the first two album they're a really tight rhythmic post punk band not a trillion miles from JD.

The Clash - dismal and embarrassing for the most part.
The Jam - portentous, dull 'spokesman for a generation' toss. see also: Paul Weller
Mogwai - quiet loud quiet loud quiet loud just sod off and die.
Bloc Party - although they are stretching the term "legends" a bit far. Bargain bin bollox more like.

you hit the nail on the head there, wrighty can be annoying, but you can see hes becoming more open to good music which is what this site did for me along with many others I am sure, I am sure hes not that bad in person, we all have intenet personas. In life i'm slightly deranged, whereas here on planet DiS im quite quite normal

                                    I'll download the named tracks.

I can trust your judgement. You're a proper person.

                                      have you actually heard?

                                      • i own three albums...

and i've heard more. Its the voice rather than the songs to be honest.

Apparently i'd like the first couple...

                                  • you can surely see why though

Morrissey's voice is samey and whiny, and you have to think this is slightly charming to like them (i do)

he is an amazing singer but maybe shows this more on some of his solo stuff, range-wise?

ANYWAY I think Stones as well, from the admittedly not enough I've heard.

and pretty much all allegedly 'real' punk from back in the day, before we had draw, man, etc

There's few funnier things you can do when you're all a bit merry than Morrissey impressions. In fact, I'm doing them right now.

                                      • Well

If you don't like the gravelly thing then get.....The Heart Of Saturday Night and Blue Valentine. Even if you really hate the voice you must apprecciate the songwriting! Appreciate-ah! And the consistancy. If anything, Waits is pretty underrated. I can't name one other person who's been going so long, has never made a bad album (or even a slightly dodgy one) and is still making great and original music.

I loves me some Dylan/Neil Young/Lou Reed but jeez...

now i know why there isnt much good music around nowadays. i never knew that DiS-ers had such contempt for the past.

i dont quite understand that reasoning, 'they were around before i was born, so i never got into them'. does that really make a difference? surely if you just put in a cd, it doesnt matter when it was made.

                                        • Pixies - Absolutely horrible. Can't think of a decent song by them.

New Order - Nah fuck off. Shite.

                                          The Fall - Nope. Awful.

The Clash (do they count) - Shite

The Stooges - Good. But overrated.

                                          :)
