"Legends"
What so-called 'Legends' of indie do you find a bit crap?
Pixies - 5 excellent songs, the rest either crap or boring.
Kraftwerk - Nasty and horrible.
Talking Heads - Pretentious, up-itself tuneless drivell. Tremendously loved by Virgin Radio.
Save the "bla bla, you like the Vines... you'll like TH when you're a big boy etc...", because I probably won't.
Also, does ANYONE else agree with me on these bands?
Talking
Heads (By a long-lost DiSer):
"boring, dull wankery combined with awful faux meaningful lyrics that would only provide the HATE emotion in someone"
The
singles.
Agreed
with the Clash.
I wouldn't say shite
but the velvet underground don't really do anything for me, I like bits of them but 90% of the time I'm just awashed with meh.
I quite like talking heads BUT Devo > Talking Heads. Everytime.
Kraftwerk aren't really indie but I guess you just mean seminal nands/artists or whatever.
Yes
I have.
Sorry, I'll try harder next timer... :(
The Cure
Are abysmal in pretty much every way i care to think of.
ARG
I LOVE the cure, well, I LOVE the stuff up until the end of 1989. They haven't written 1 good song since the 80's, in my opinion obviously, but they made enough good stuff in the 80's to eclipse all of the shite.
And 'The Walk' is one of my favourite songs ever.
I hate all I've heard
So I've never persued it beyond the singles. So I could well haver heard 89 onwards. Might do some back catalogue dipping at some point. I quite like being the token cure hater on here though...
yeah
I guess though, if you hate the vocals, you're pretty much going to hate everything they've done.
ahhaha
i thought the previous three posts were osmeone talking to themselves.
I agree
with the Clash and Joy Division. The Stooges are fecking awesome though. Apart from that drone song with the Velvet Underground man on it. Coinkidink? I think not
what
i wanna be your dog?
i love the pixies
i cant really think of any "boring" songs by them.
for me i do not "get":
joy division
white stripes
libertines
nirvana
pearl jam
u2
doors
2pac
talking heads arent tuneless
i dont care what you think of them, but they were certainly very melodic.
the clash fucking suck, and the who are actually incredibly shit, tho.
i don't like
the Pixies, Kraftwerk or the Talking Heads.
But they aren't crap, they just aren't to my taste.
The Vines are crap...
Sonic Youth
and The Fall.
I've never quite understood why nonsense-poem lyrics and the occasional feedback meltdown are enough for a band to qualify as "clever" (whatever that means anyway). Again, I wouldn't call them shite... I just don't see what the fuss is about.
The Pixies, on the other hand are GENIUS
agreement
on talking heads, the doors and the cure. just don't float my galleon.
the doors
are awful. horrid keys, horrid "i'm a deep and meaningful poet" singer.
PISS
I still
say that Pet Shop Boys are a better band than Joy Division. And I mean it.
Most of these bands I 'don't mind', but am not a massive fan of. But then I wasn't generally around 'at the time' for most of them, which probably would have made a bit of difference.
Love Pixies though. LOVELOVELOVE.
I would say
I didn't get the white stripes and then I saw them live and I understood them so so much better. Just got over my dislike of The Pixies though I'll never be a fan. Surfer Rosa played in its entirety didn't push too many buttons.
I'd say I've tried a little with Nick Cave and need more time.
I'll never understand Animal Collective.
I really really
just do not get it with Radiohead. Never have, never ever will.
Bu Bu But...
They're so bloody brillianr?!?!
Bu Bu But...
The Cure are so bloody brilliant!?!?
Television
like why did the most boring band of the NY punk thing get so important?
true
television are a bit crap.
David Bowie
Shit
How controversial
*yawn*
How
Am I trying to be controversial by saying Bowie? I'm not fucking Martbowski or I'd have said "the Beatles" or something stupid. I just find the majority of Bowie's music to be extremely uninteresting, pretentious, style over substance and his voice is irritating, etc etc etc...
somehow
I don't really get XTC. Everything kept on pointing to me checking them out so I bought Skylarking but wasn't really impressed at all. I might dig it out again later but it's already had a few listens and I'm really not sure what the fuss is about. Maybe I started in the wrong place.
Its
not supposed to be controversial, Brainers.
Its for a discussion about ... bah. I care not what you think of my thread. You think the Killers are 'cunty'. :'(
aw...
you know I love you wrighty but I love Talking Heads more.
and really don't see your criticisms of them as being true. except possibly for 'pretentious' but then I never really see that as a bad thing.
Talking Heads to me are fun, they're funny/witty playful, happy music. The lyrics are satirical and supposed be dryly funny, not deep and meaningful and profound. They're like radiohead with a party in their pants. Sure David Byrne might have started releasing CD-Roms about architecture instead of albums but... aw never mind.
last ditch attempt if you're interested in giving them another go. watch Stop Making Sense - all the way through, on your own, with an open mind. and look at it as 'they were having fun and messing around with ideas' rather than 'they were making an artistic statement'.
and from one die-hard Joy Division fan to another I don't think 'tuneless' and 'pretentious' can be used as criticisms.
PS I like the first vines album a lot.
Talking Heads
For the most part are just a great pop band aren't they? With the BEST DANCING EVER.
Television
are really really good!!! Gloves on people, gloves on
Why
do I need to wear gloves to listen to Television? Gloves on my ears, perhaps.
I had to fight the urge to type Terrorvision there. Make of that what you will.
Noooooo
way.
I find melody in JD, just over longer periods of bars, rather than melodic riffs.
Also, from what I've read or watched on Joy Division, they seem pretty... unpretentious. I mean... take the video for the TH song that says 'And You may ask yourself...'. Fair enough, its a bit of fun, but its so irritating to see him jerk around and SPEAK.
I think the speaking maybe a large part of why I dislike them.
aww
i assume you're referring to Once In A Lifetime? "you may ask yourself, how do i work this?" etc?
but it's one of the finest songs EVER. anywhere. ever. gah. i don't like talking heads consistently, but they were inventive and interesting, and when they got something right, they were unspeakably good.
agreed on the clash, agreed on the pixies, and kraftwerk irritate me. and sir al of cxxk is quite right about the who. they are pants.
nirvana can fuck off, toxicjesus is right about the stones, weezer bore me, and i cannot see that i will ever, ever be able to bring myself to give a shit about the sex pistols.
and all this nonsense about the white stripes is just silly.
fair enough. just JD aren't exactly the Vines when it comes to being poptastic.
And as for talking heads 'talking', there are very few songs where he does that (although to be fair they're some of my favourites).
Maybe you'd prefer some earlier talking heads. like the '77' or 'buildings and food' stuff.
download 'psycho killer' and 'don't worry about the government'. then maybe 'found a job' and 'i'm not in love'. or download the greatest hits cd from somewhere. maybe the later funk-driven stuff might not be your thing. but the first two album they're a really tight rhythmic post punk band not a trillion miles from JD.
I h8
the velvet underground
gang of four
television
but i can atleast appreciate they were doing something 'unique'.
I'm quite surprised..
that no one has said The Rolling Stones so far.. so I shall: The Rolling Stones.. unless people don't consider them as 'legends' which I would definitely understand. Same applies to Led Zeppelin.
the reason
no one has mentioned them is because they are fucking ace!
Nah,
I'm with him. Very overrated, I don't get either Zep or the Stones. Zep - a couple of good tunes, the rest is about half an hour too long. Stones - some of it is just...not very good.
In My Humble Opinion, obviously.
don't get Zep or the Stones, too.
But i wouldn't say they're overrated.
Just not for me !
my two cents
The Clash - dismal and embarrassing for the most part.
The Jam - portentous, dull 'spokesman for a generation' toss. see also: Paul Weller
Mogwai - quiet loud quiet loud quiet loud just sod off and die.
Bloc Party - although they are stretching the term "legends" a bit far. Bargain bin bollox more like.
I've never liked the stones
Hard to disagree with their legendry status, I just think they're bollocks.
thing is
i agree about the stones.
however, if you can ignore the disgraceful lyrics about wizards and "baby baby" and all that shit, led zeppelin were awesome.
I get barracked for this but...
The Smiths do nothing for me.
But most of the other bands mentioned on here are good.
But one man's shit is another mans shiny.
I'd say
Pavement - never got the fuss about them, very average
ironically
i consider wrighty a legend.
...
you hit the nail on the head there, wrighty can be annoying, but you can see hes becoming more open to good music which is what this site did for me along with many others I am sure, I am sure hes not that bad in person, we all have intenet personas. In life i'm slightly deranged, whereas here on planet DiS im quite quite normal
*twitches and cackles mischeivously*
The Fall
Tom Waits
New Order
Very well
I'll download the named tracks.
I can trust your judgement. You're a proper person.
FUCKING U2
FUCKING NEW ORDER
you are
wrong about Waits - you know it ;)
What Waits
have you actually heard?
i own three albums...
and i've heard more. Its the voice rather than the songs to be honest.
Apparently i'd like the first couple...
you can surely see why though
Morrissey's voice is samey and whiny, and you have to think this is slightly charming to like them (i do)
he is an amazing singer but maybe shows this more on some of his solo stuff, range-wise?
ANYWAY I think Stones as well, from the admittedly not enough I've heard.
and pretty much all allegedly 'real' punk from back in the day, before we had draw, man, etc
At an indie-savvy party
There's few funnier things you can do when you're all a bit merry than Morrissey impressions. In fact, I'm doing them right now.
Well
If you don't like the gravelly thing then get.....The Heart Of Saturday Night and Blue Valentine. Even if you really hate the voice you must apprecciate the songwriting! Appreciate-ah! And the consistancy. If anything, Waits is pretty underrated. I can't name one other person who's been going so long, has never made a bad album (or even a slightly dodgy one) and is still making great and original music.
I loves me some Dylan/Neil Young/Lou Reed but jeez...
ah
now i know why there isnt much good music around nowadays. i never knew that DiS-ers had such contempt for the past.
and
i dont quite understand that reasoning, 'they were around before i was born, so i never got into them'. does that really make a difference? surely if you just put in a cd, it doesnt matter when it was made.
seconded
on new order
GOD
really,really,really bad.
crap
not God is bad.
cos he's meant all good and everything.
*hides from christians*
Pixies - Absolutely horrible. Can't think of a decent song by them.
New Order - Nah fuck off. Shite.
The Fall - Nope. Awful.
The Clash (do they count) - Shite
The Stooges - Good. But overrated.
:)
im not a smiths fan ... well correct that, i like some of the songs im just not a fan of morriseys "singing"
