i got 100 broken windows and thinks its fecking excellent
should i get their other albums or will i be dissapointed?!
the Remote Part or the latest one
they are utter drivel
is good but nothing like 100 - get Hope Is Important next then Captain then Remote Part.
Not heard the new one but it seems like it might be a bit lighters in the dark and less what you're reacting positively to. In fact if you really like the 100 BW stuff you might want to skip TRP
is the most radio friendly piece of diet REM poo poo I've ever been subjected to (not through choice) :)
It follows on a natural curve from the more melodic stuff on 100 Broken Windows, and it's a very good album. The new one is a grower and it's not nearly as bad as people make out, but it's not their best. I don't have anything before 100BW yet.
wel hope is important is on play for 3 cds for £18 so might have to get that as well as a sigur ros (another band i have yet to check out) album duno about my third however hmm....
it's immense. For me the Idlewild albums have never lived up to what I thought they would be. The ep is just greatness throughout
EP is surely just the band fresh, hungry and in a smaller dosage?
hope is important
100 broken windows
warnings/promises (is that even its name?)
maybe that's why it works for me. I fell in love with that ep and when Hope is Important came out it just couldn't match it because it seemed like an ep+some other not so great songs. Idlewild have got some huge filler moments.
Get them all if you can. Though not necessarily prioritising this over other important musical purchases.
All good in different ways. Including the new one.
was el capitan .. that was actaully pretty catchy
By the harbour I harbour !
Woomble writes some really good understated lyrics and yet he's never really praised for them.
with my fist!
He does write some really good lyrics, I don't think that's one of them though...
I agree completely with OceanStorm that 100BW is the best album, and Warnings/Promises is a grower, but not as good as the onther albums. It is much better than everyone says; it's just not what idlewild were before.
its REM ;)
on this one. Last album really isn't good...
I forgot a question mark there Imagechange - I was mocking that one because people have often said the lyrics are too sixth form poetry ( a redundant insult anyway) that's the only time I've thought woah! that was bad.
"you are an opportunity without an opportunity....we exist without existing"
"the only way to really learn that the alphabet made up the words"
"Then I am what I am not, I am what I am not
So there must be something more then
I am what I am not,
If there's nothing more then
I am what I am not, I am what I am not
There must be something more then
If I am what I am not "
"My anger is a form of madness
So I'd rather have hope than sadness"
there's obviously a lot more, but these make me smile
(i love Idlewild threads)
In that case, you're absolutely right. I like some of his lyrics though: "young without youth", "great times wasted" "i created myself, to be on my own".
I like his repetition too, usually. Just sounds a bit naff on a couple of the new songs. It's like his own words have become a paraody of his own words.
Warnings/Promises doesn't actually sound very much like any era of R.E.M.
Roddy's phrasing has got more and more like Michael Stipe as time's gone on. And there are chunks of the vocal melodies that sound like REM. And the intro to As If I Hadnt Slept.
I dont think you can go so far as to describe it as "diet REM" though.
Fuckin mint. My favourite band ever. Bar none. The albums go in order of.....
1.The Remote Part
2.Warnings/promises (don't start.)
3. 100 Broken Windows
4.Hope is Important
5. Captain EP.
Roddy Woomble has (apart from an ace name) one of the most underated voices ever.
I fulfilled a bit of a music dream when I saw them live earlier this year. 100 Broken Windows is my fave album of theirs but I like them all.
Papa Smurf - I would get their other ones, especially if you see them going cheap. Their last one (Warnings/Promises) has grown on me but it still disappoints and they have so gone all REM. If you think that's an excellent thing then go buy now!
The singles of The Remote Part were great and I love the last track on the album. It does have a couple of real nothing songs though, you know - songs that you can't remember the tune of even though you've heard them loads of times.
I agree with moribund. TRP isn't THAT bad, there are a few good songs but definitely steer well clear of the latest one. It sounds more R.E.M. than R.E.M. and not in a good way.
Hope Is Important and Captain are still ace though!
