Is at the same time both the worst and best thing I've ever seen...
One Armed Scissor from the Later Louder Dvd btw... Does anyone know if they played another song?
they played rolodex propaganda as well
after which robbie williams was on
cedric had been kicking a chair around on stage
"can my mate have his chair back?"
and launched into a piano ballad.
whats at all bad about the one armed scissor performance?
I thought it was fantastic because it pissed my shitmusic-liking uni housemate off massively.
Plus Robbie Williams had to go on after them and he looked actually scared.
clips of this performance, I really want to see the full thing.
Best thing ever on Jools.
is the rest of the DVD worth it?
musically. I mean Cedric is clearly cracked-up off his face and Omar is possibly too, but the "performance" is great.
It's a pretty good DVD actually, off the top of my head it's worth it for Qotsa, Screaming Trees, Pj Harvey, Sonic Youth, Jesus And Mary Chain and DICK DALE!
Actually the JAMC performance is genius too. With Jim Reid headbutting the camera at one point I think, and then singing a verse with the mic unplugged and sitting on the floor.
ruled when he was on. They have all this stuff on dvd now?
ATDI was awful musically yes and I just remembered thinking he looked like a twat throwing the chair about.
I thought the Hives were better when the guy climbed into the crowd and got in people's faces.
They should book Send More Paramedics for Later. Now THAT would be good. Cover Jools with fake blood I say.
I was hoping Jools to join in on boogie-woogie piano but sadly he didn't.
I remember grinning all the way through it, thinking THAT'S how all bands should play live.
What that performance was fucking insanely amazing and got me hooked for life.
wants to pay me I'll tape the performance for them, as I captured it.
do it do it do it
i could watch that all day
Thanks t_c, that was great. I like the other guitarist (Jim Ward?) sticking faithfully to the song with a 'why can't they just play the fucking thing' look on his face while the 'two afros' arse about.
Cheers, I have been trying to find this for AGES. I still have the VHS somewhere in my house....but that requires looking.
i had it on vhs too
from a rerun when i was living in germany.
to record it i had to watch it with my dad.
that was funny
...and I love the way the crowd have no fucking idea what's going on. Possibly the most canned applause ever on LWJH.
Fan fucking tastic.
that's one of the greatest things i've ever seen.
As they say around my way. It's just a bloody shame that Sparta are boring and Mars Volta are completely.... ridiculous
I just wish I could have seen Jools Hollands comments afterwards, that performance is probably the least suited thing to his show I've ever seen.
to remember Pat Cash (who was the 'celebrity' in the crowd) saying he liked them. Which is quite cool.
I've downloaded it and now I have to wait another 10 mins because I'm recording People Like Us just now. GAH!
And it's not often you'll hear that!
can anyone direct me to some kind of database for At the drive in live videos? or email them to me?
i'd love that i would!
I've got a few more ATDI live vids, a couple of American TV show performances, although they are really really tame in comparision to the Jools one, they probably got warned about it.
I have some Big Day Out vids though, their fucking mint. If i get some time/energy i'll throw them up aswell.
Thanks for that man, quality stuff.
Sigur Ros at Jools. I havent actually seen it before but it fucking rocks!!!
and watched the performance on YouTube:
I really want this on DVD now. Actually, to have been in the audience would be incredible. (Yes, I know this is like a red rag to a Jamie Summers, but I don't care...)
is to not say anything unless specifically asked. i think i've gone on about it enough now that its' been printed in a book.
It does sound quite interesting, but not enough for me to buy, given that I've never been to Southampton
i'll bring it to zonino and you can give it back at arcade fire? its quite a good read.
is there too: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0_lXPrCpSVE
I assume this is the Cosmonaut performance referenced: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dnu_yXbbnqU
for the NME Awards. Still amazing, though. The first thing Cedric does? A handstand. What a man.
I thought there was a vid of "Cosmonaut" on Jools Holland. "Rolodex Propaganda" is good too, but it doesn't have the full chair-throwing, guitar-hurling cracked-out action...
it does have Jim Ward playing the maracas! Haha.
every time i listen to at the drive-in, i can't believe how much they >>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>> the mars volta.
i wonder what jools thought of them, i wish they'd included the "and that was...At The Drive-Thru, ladies and gentlemen!"
best band ever
that one of cosmonaut is a bit better though
near the end, guitar breaks.
What do you do?
throw it at someone, then pick up a tambourine and start spanking it.
the camera goes straight to a bemused Robbie Williams, about to launch into a ballad, with a look of "how the fuck do I follow that?"
I rate this: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=heBvVtp7iGs
1) I was there - you could probably see me getting down in the crowd if you're eagle eyed.
2) Rhythm section make this band. Especially the drummer. But especially the bass. But especially the drummer. Would you have heard a chorus like this in At The Drive In? Hell no.
3) I am vindicated that the person who looked shell shocked after the Jools performance of ONE ARMED SCISSOR was Van Morrison. And NOT Robbie Williams as some people think.
I still have it on video
dunno if van morrison was involved
doing Rolodex on TFI Friday. I was right at the front for it, with my sister and I being the only people remotely excited by it while everyone else just stood there bemused. Cedric gave his guitar away too.
I knew I'd forgotten to mention something - they were on TFI in the same week (same day, possibly) in its last series when Evans had fucked off and Donna Air and Huey from the Fun Lovin' Criminals (whither he?) were presenting that week, and I indeed do have it on tape. There's a fantastic camera shot of Omar knocking his mike stand over and throwing his guitar over his head from the back of the stage and nobody at all is reacting to anything. Then didn't they turn the feedback up to drown Air's mike out and leave the stage?
there's a guy with short black hair and atd-i t-shirt banging his head quite furiously.
That was the 15 year-old me :)
Donna Air was drowned out, and she idiotically announced "That was At The Drive-In by Rolodex Propaganda" - much to Cedric's obvious amusement.
Says here Williams, Morrison, Guru, Craig David, Herbie Hancock and John Hiatt.
actually sounds better with the guitar out of tune
in why singers need to have some musical talent
two of omar's guitar strings break right at the start, he does fairly well considering
Jim's clearly carrying both Omar and Cedric all the way through, though
from that one performance you can predict their entire future. they split because cedric and omar wanted to make out of control music that spazzed a lot and the other guys wanted to make more commercial poppy rock. thus they split, and out came mars volta (good at first, then shite egomaniacs) and sparta (boring and not doing well at all). so really, they should have stuck together to keep the two sides of it going, as the fantasticness of the music always came from the tension between the spazz and the catchy rock action.
As someone said higher up, you can see Jim Ward "sticking faithfully to the song with a 'why can't they just play the fucking thing' look on his face while the two afros arse about"
these are both utterly amazing, big day out in oz. everything just kicks off, cedric bent on killing his microphone!
oh and then there's this from the same show...
i've got a Mpg of this, so if people with a decent connection want it i can throw it on a yousendit, although it just may take some time.
Do it, ive always wanted to see it.
Surely your MIA should be to bump shit, not this, this post is full of awesomeness
