The best anticon release since cLOUDDEAD's debut? I think it might be. Album of the year? Not far off.
kinda thing is it?
if pavement made a neurotic hip hop album. Have I put you off yet? I hope not. It IS hip hop from what is now pretty much a band under the name Why? The rapper, Yoni Wolf as a lyricist reminds me of Malkmus, conjuring up beautiful (but also disgusting) imagery and veering off on tangents (although much less so on this album). I think you'd like it.
I think i may investigate an MP3 or two.
DO you have a link to a website?
a quote by me on the cover sticker... true story.
...in my bag right now for the tube ride home.
mmmm but really? Doesn't sound very lo fi from the description I'm reading hip hop post rock indie.
Diver - my copy has a rocksound quote on it but I've seen numerous DiS quotes everywhere.
I'll listen to this by the end of the day.
Nah. Listen to it, then make up your own mind. Mike Diver works for Rock Sound too, I think.
I see what you mean with Pavement there although it isn't lo-fi musically more lush and vivid, filmic.
So Diver moonlights? I had no idea.
lots of why? stuff of a mate, I really love it, I need to buy some of my own now. And he lent it to me after I lent him a Pavement album, I can really hear the similarities.
They why? song I really love is one about his dad watching the TV - can anyone tell me which one this is, and what it's on?
i know - they have an EP Sanddollars and this is their first full album.
When the singer was doing Why? solo he did an alb named oaklandazulasylum - the only full alb - 2003 - could be that?
yes, I think it was that, thanks! I need to do me some buying.
I write for rock sound too, innit.
you're ace. I hope they pay you well.
Nice Squirrel - I admire your spending power. I'm afraid to go near the shops at the moment.
be avoiding shops actually, seeing as I am shortly to be unemployed. But I'm sure a few CDs can't hurt too much...
I spent £40 on music and I wasn't sorry at all. I have no concept of spending. I also rarely get my balance at the bank because it must be heading towards dire and YET I'll find myself in Fopp by next week.
make me really annoyed that I didn't go and see Why? when they played Cardiff the other week.
Just played this right through on the way to work this morning. Not sure if i like it. It seems a little 'weak ass' to me. The segments that contain hip-hop are just too tame for me. I like aggressive in your face rapping, something that this simply is not. Also, i find the vocals extremly irritating.
it's because it's not hip hop in that sense. It really only takes elements of hip hop and sounds more like verse to me/spoken word ish rather than any attempt to be up there with the Ice T's, Cubes and whoevers of the rap world. The Pavement analogy of warn's is pretty accurate. By vocals do you mean you find the rapping, tongue twisting around words annoying?
i do find that annoying too yes. But that wasn't what i meant exactly. I just his actually voice painful at times. Take the track 'Hoofs' - at the start his voice seems to wobble and warble, i found that rather irritating.
I always try to listen to an album all the way through on first listen. I managed to do this, but winced all the way to work.
