in front of a sold out audience
it's called an album launch, album LAUNCH.
*somewhat genuinely curious as to whether it's a big change from before

Vernon does whatever he wants, gives zero fucks.
has Justin Vernon been snorting for the last 5 years?
I'm not saying I don't like it. It's William S Burroughs doing the lyrics for Talk Talk going crunk.
I'm just baffled.
I know, the fuck is going on with those lyrics.
no one is telling Justin Vernon not to do what he's doing. he's out there on his own and people are just nodding like yeah.
Lasted about a minute, which was a minute too much. What a giant steaming jug of piss.
top tunes, top banter
Actually its probably going to be somewhere inbetween isnt it? With some good moments but a little too much going on becoming a little self indulgent production wise and not letting the songs shine through
i don't think he's going for classic song writing here, beautiful songs that might be smothered in production flourishes. the lyrics sound as deconstructed as the music.
in his last album I enjoyed the songs with a good growing melody (Calgary, Wash etc) over the ones that drifted a bit (Hinnom, TX, Beth/Rest). Im hopeful that this album could be good but I also see some signs that it might be more hard work and elusive then I want it to be.
are going to have some sort of deconstruct-off, I hope Justin's got his shit together, because Callus is pretty disappointing (given how good A Sufi and a Killer was).
If you read the press release for the album on the website, it sounds awfully on the nose for someone who's taking the piss (http://boniver.org/bio).
Honestly, sounds like he's been suffering from a lack of direction for his own music. Collaborating with Kanye sent him down a wormhole of collaboration with trendy artists, and I doubt he'd feel comfortable putting out a straight cabin folk album. Not to mention that over time that album became a favourite of the Mumford and Sons set/people with terrible taste in music. Seems like a reaction to all that, seems pretentious as fuck too, but nevertheless I like the tracks we've heard so far.
are pretty good, and miles better than the last album
I mean, it is - it's the next step - a more scattershot and murky version of that sound.
Don't know why people are upset, though. It's just exactly the same sort of songwriting applied to a slightly weirder (better?) soundscape.
I guess I've been eased in by loving his collaborations with pop artists but it's almost exactly what I was expecting with an extra dose of weird to shake of, as mentioned above, Mumford and Sons fans.
1st 3 tracks are great although I will say I never watch the visuals to lyric videos as they always ruin the song.
In the same way Present Tense was really pretty alike to smother. The instrumentation has changed but its pretty superficial the core element of the artist is still there and its more development the revolution.
