also, it's been updated since i posted the link to it
Ah well, I can wait
Still go back to Channel Orange all the time. Sssssssort of wish it didn't have such an on-the-nose title, though.
Very interested to hear about the album's creation as he's obviously a perfectionist. Would be fascinating to know why he thought it was ready a year ago but delayed it until now?
what work went on in the mean time.
If it was just a self imposed deadline and he let it go to get things right then more power to him. Kanye, PLEASE take notes.
Rather than release it anyway and front like it's all some sort of conceptual work of art, pretend like it will be finished over time to increase Tidal subscriptions, then just not bother.
but it's been widely circulated that they'd be avaliable there exclusively at some point in the future
also people are now saying he's finishing a novel (?)
But remain dubious because there's been no announcement...
Also - it's still Thursdat nigh in LA so I guess the earliest we'd get it would be about 9am their time? That'd be 5pm here. Or is there generally a set time for 'international' release dates?
doesn't come out on time! who'd have thought?
i've waited long enough, i can wait some more. never got my hopes up. think there's a nonzero chance that he decides he doesn't like it any more and starts again from scratch.
and tbf to him, he never claimed it was coming out today, that was just rumoured.
nov 13 2016. though that's a sunday, so seems unlikely
will he/ won't he
frank 2 is bliss
a webpage(?) with images from the magazine has leaked. looks like an index/contents page that'd link to articles. lots of images echo stuff posted already by other people/frank collaborators on social media, including this alleged interview with the based god.
august 26th is being thrown around, and the november date co-incides with tyler the creators festival - so, album out soonish, live debut at that?
there's also a bot for when he next appears on the live stream (dunno if it works lol) https://twitter.com/FrankOMocean
lots people are sleuth-ing and fishing about for details with regards to a launch party and the warehouse the stream is coming from, if you cba to click that link.
was made in collaboration with tom sachs http://www.thefader.com/2016/08/01/tom-sachs-frank-oceans-visual-art-piece-interview
It's not his new album and it's an Apple exclusive, so I obviously won't bother with it.
The album, no longer called Boys Don't Cry, is apparently out this weekend, available exclusively on all good illegal downloading services (and probably Apple music too).
Endless (visual album out today in Apple Music) and Boys Don't Cry should drop this weekend
that at one stage he was planning a concept album based around the world's first female F1 driver
a lot of this washes over me but there are fantastic moments so far.
apparently charlotte st news opened at midnight?
hope the book is released to actually buy because i really want it
as much as the album
what a night
would be quite funny to hear Bowie sing something on this but we all know that won't happen
Not even sure if they're samples or just general inspirations
'don't do cocaine or muijuana that stuff is heavily addictive unless its under doctors prescriptions'
cheers franks mum
vv chill currently listening bc this is the FUCKING RETURN OF THE MONOCULTURE?
remember when CO came out and every1 said RETURN OF THE MONOCULTURE
Guess I like RnB now :^)
I reckon the pop up shops were just a one off :(
Kanye wrote something about mcds?
Can someone get the mag for me I PROMISE if you do i'll slow down with the shitposts
so it's not gonna happen unless they end up on ebay
but it seems pretty insubstantial. it doesn't sound like something 5 years in the making. like 60% of the album sounds like some kind of interlude or intro or outro or unfinished demo. maybe i'm just guilty of the 'it's not what i wanted/expected therefore it's not good' mentality idk. need to listen to it more obvs.
<3 white ferrari though
got Futura Free on repeat, it's incredible
joint favourite for me with godspeed atm. also would have liked quite a few of the shorter songs should be longer, same as on endless. i guess they're short for a reason, his choice, his album, his art etc. all of the ungrateful sods moaning about it should just be happy he gave us anything else at all cause we don't deserve it.
wonder if we're gonna get some more tyrone lebon videos?
also, still kind of can't believe wolfgang tillmans got to launch his music career opening and closing the first frank ocean release proper in four years.
interested to hear more feedback on this and if people are getting a lot more out of this than I am - often feel like with big follow-ups i've just gotten jaded. felt the same way with TPAB
It's slowly growing on me and I'm starting to enjoy some individual tracks and moments on quite a lot of it (Solo, the end of Self Control, Nights), but still feels poorly sequenced, one-paced and tbh a bit of a chore to listen to from start to finish. Like he's made a whole hour-long album of the more ballady cuts from Channel Orange but with more avant and sound-collagey touches (which as an approach I really admire, in practice I just don't find that interesting tbh)
anyone know where I can listen to 'Easy' and 'Mistubishi Sony' from the magazine CD?
Read some things about the credits, though Andre 3000 is the only one that seems obviously decipherable - didn't spot the beatles or elliott smith bits, and would never have clocked Kendrick or Beyonce's vocal contributions.
Anyone know how Gang Of Four, Eno, Amber Coffman, Kanye were involved/homaged/sampled?
wrote a poem about McDonalds which is in the magazine
Amber Coffman (and Rostam Batmanglij) worked on studio sessions although no info on which
sure others are the same
seems everyone's just gone fairly legit these days, so that sense of event is diluted a bit with these streaming exclusives
miss the days of 2006 where everyone would be discussing a big album leak a month in advance of the release. Can't remember the last time that happened.
(As an aside I think music criticism has really suffered. Lemonade, Pablo, etc. Been relatively relieved at the lack of rushed desperate reviews of this but they'll still all come out too soon)
Loads of rush reviews for this one out already. Everyone that I've read has given four stars, essentially saying that it's not immediate but give it time and it will reveal itself. Oh the irony.
We've just got a whole lot of music dropped on us, in a bizarrely anti-climactic fashion after all the hype, that will take a long time to digest. I'm eager to listen but might take my time giving an opinion (still remember thinking nostalgia, ultra was a bit rubbish on first go)
only listened to it a couple of times (blond/blonde that is)
a lot of the reaction (lack of hooks/focus) reminds me a bit of arca's long players where i'm always convinced they'll be amazing based on listening to the upfront tracks (thought 'nikes' was amazing the first few times i've heard it) but then 1 hour of aimlessness isn't as enticing
really like a few tunes and am currently digging it enough to want to give it a few more proper listens (i.e. not while sitting at my desk). like the production etc in general
Couple of really good songs tucked in there and some nice 'sounds' but it's very formless and meandering in places.
if you've made your mind up on it already then cmon, it's a few days old
unravels more with each listen and got an amazing disjointed dreamlike flow. which definitely mirrors the elusiveness of frank and the random way it came out. going to need to take a few late night walks and drives with this one. nikes and nights are my standouts so far. i can anticipate it being a bit polarising but i think for those who can get on board with it it's going to be a heavyweight
did about 5 double takes when i saw yung lean in the credits
his best stuff IMO.
..but gets a bit Secret Life Of Plants-y in places aye.
is this a Stream only album or will we be getting a download option or maybe even a physical release? I'm old school and can't be bothered with streaming my music, especially when i have dodgy broadband speeds where i live.
by merging the best bits of Endless and 2/3rds of Blonde.
A bit too much stuff I'm not mad on on Blonde, I think I prefer Channel Orange even though that's still a little frustrating. Wouldn't be Frank though otherwise. Also it is continuing to grow.
though for me even the heights aren't /that/ good. Not sure anything off these two would make my top 10 Frank Ocean tracks - nothing close to the level of Pyramids, say
not got much to say about it on first listen, other than i enjoyed it. does feel demoey/sketchy but i think his stuff always did; always sounded like slightly fancy bedroom productions fronted by a singer who could justify the most expensive studio band and production money can buy. so the self-released DIY approach of this album, and presumably the rest of his career suits him down to the ground. think i'm gonna really enjoy digging into it. absolutely 0% bangers at the same time but whatevs. someone else will release bangers.
On one level I think the album's low key nature would be easier to swallow for some if it weren't five years in the making. It feels like such a transitional record that if there had been a release 2 years before, and if we could expect one 2 years hence, it wouldn't feel so minor, just an interesting change of pace.
With that said, I'm rather enjoying it.
I'm TOTALLY fascinated by the behind the scenes stuff, though. That he fulfilled his contract (somehow?) with Endless and self-released this after paying back the label for recording costs - 2 million - apparently with one large benefactor OTHER THAN Apple.
Will have interesting implications for Apple exclusives - apparently Universal have said they won't allow artists to do it anymore - must be feeling very foolish/fucked over.
but over the first few listens it strikes me as one of the more subversive mainstream releases in recent years. it's not excatly metal machine music, but it's possibly the biggest cureveball since 808s (*a trick that kanye couldn't really repeat with yeezus or pablo - although the latter seems to have anticipated two of the year's biggest releases with colouring book and now this). often, those are records met with divided opinions on release but go on to be favourites/cult classics.
it seems like a particular realisation of his kind of DIY asthetic when all the pressure was on him to go into the opposite direction. meanwhile, the weeknd is probably off making a disney soundtrack, for better or worse. i don't feel like i've scratched the surface after a few listens, or that i love it yet, but i definitely respect it as an approach.
by people on Pitchfork's FB page complaining that the 9.0 score for Blond is too low ('should be at least 9.2-9.5!' says one person). Even better are the people complaining because it got 0.1 less than Coloring Book.
it is massively better than coloring book
think the average quality of the tracks is higher than on CO. no stand outs? nights, ivy, nikes, solo & reprise, white ferrari, seigfried and self control are all highlights for me. his most consistent set of songs yet. it isn't necessarily the complete classic we know he has in him (neither was CO, with a couple of world beating tracks flattering the rest of it) but it's a step closer.
disagree that it's a transitional record either. think it may be seen as a logical conclusion of this stage of his career and a platform for whatever he does next with his new found independence.
grown on me every day since, have little fragments of melodies and lyrics stuck in my head all the time. pretty much everything except the skits is great.
