To begin with.
something something support Joanna Newsom
is his best and most accessible
cos Knock Knock if so
is there much difference between smog/solo?
but i don't think there's a big difference? except earlier Smog is quite lo-fi.
Of the Smog albums Knock Knock is the best, and it's his best album overall.
The solo stuff is very consistent- you won't go far wrong with any of the albums. Woke on a Whaleheart and Sometimes I Wish I Was an Eagle are probably the best ones.
Wild Love for lo-lo-fi
A River Ain't Too Much To Love for sad introspection
Dream River for laying on your bed feeling hazy
there's a pretty good live album he released just before becoming Bill Callahan that's good for getting an overview of his earlier stuff
general trend is the earlier you get back the sillier it gets... the first few are mostly attempts noise experiments and weird out of tune guitar things.
my tip for most underrated of all his songs is this one about Prince telling some hot girls to go away cos he wants to concentrate on recording drums
Red Apple Falls and Supper don't get mentioned too often but are excellent as well.
Are great starting points.
Dongs of Sevotion a fine follow up to knock knock too.
It's all great tbh Eric, and when I saw him last year his set was easily in the top 3 I've ever seen in person, so you're probably in for a treat.
Saw him at the southbank and green man and was bored both times tbh.
Can see how if you weren't in the right mood at the time itd be easy to detatch from it though.
Red Apple Falls, Doctor Came At Dawn, Dongs Of Sevotion all great too.
Eagle is probably the best S/T album.
the kind of more twee/droll stuff aint really doing it for me though so not sure this is gonna work
The doggy's bollocks.
Going to cream myself when his next album is announced.
All your women things is so sad
