nobody is allowed to talk about deafheaven or liturgy or krallice or any of that until you've listened to this in full
If I have heard it about a hundred time?
I shall use this permission wisely.
Just started listening to this. I'll liveblog my reactions.
First thought is that, much like Goatmeat's reccomendation of Grift, I find the higher pitched vocal wails a bit off-putting.
Nice and heavy
Segueing into a bit of a cock rock transition before the drums come in
Found it sounded a bit muddy at points. Dunno if that's just because it was a youtube stream? Gonna keep working through the recs from the other thread now I'm allowed to talk about them again
and I've been disliking wussy pretend metal since Alcest.
I'm curious as to why this band continuously comes up in these sorts of conversations rather than say Xasthur, Leviathan who both started around the same time.
weakling is arguably the beginning of that strand of more melodic USBM. i think of xasthur as being pure depressive, and leviathan's music is just so ugly.
I think I was just partly irked by the first youtube comment that described this as the only classic USBM album. That said I actually think Leviathan's music, particular the material released under the Lurker of Chalice moniker, can actually be quite melodic if slightly more grandiose.
I kind of feel like the roots of the "blackgaze" sound, which it seems Deafheaven are being put into, are more directly influenced by Burzum and Alcest although I'd definitely say Weakling's influence can be seen with WIITR and Krallice.
