New album in January:
is fantastic. If the new album is anywhere near as good as The Something Rain then I can't wait to hear it.
my favorite band. So excited they are still making music and that they appear to be at the top of their game. Something Rain is a lost masterpiece. Love the new track.
Last time was in Berlin on the Something Rain tour and they were utterly godlike.
The one in the venue that's like an old factory or something?
Nothing on Songkick...
They can do pretty and unpretty very well.
They can do no wrong by me. Possibly the best and most important British band of the last 20 years.
started off sounding like it was off The Hungry Saw and ended up with a bit of a latter-day Swans vibe. expected it to kick in with a wall of noise at the end.
The Something Rain was a great album
and good song. They should stop messing around and release a 70 min plus double beast of a mood swing like in the old days. Mind you if they do something as good as Something Rain i will also be very pleased.
I fucking love Tindersticks, but that was a dreadfully dull record.
I believe they are incapable of doing so. But they had a run of 3-4 unfocused records (Waiting for the Moon, Hungry Saw, Falling Down a Mountain, arguably Can Our Love) where they sounded like they didn't know what they were good at any more. Something Rain was an amazing return to form. Wonderful, wonderful band.
I loved WFTM and The Hungry Saw. That mountain one was balls but Can Our Love has some really strong stuff on it.
I can't tell you how a single song on TSR goes, despite repeated listens. It's background music. Oh, there's a joke about a cock in the first track isn't there? Zzzzzz.
Even a patchy Tindersticks album is better than a good album by pretty much anyone else. But first you describe TSR as dull, then point out that it has a joke about a cock IN THE FIRST TRACK, thus contradicting yourself
that might explain why you like TSR.
backing vocals in the new song?
what a special bunch these are.
Got mine. Row E - that's about the level you want to be at for The Barbican from memory?
fucking love this new song
In the vein of their classic duets. This is one of their best. So excited for the album.
Only been a day with it, and need some headphone time, but it's good. But then I like everything they do.
Not so much the newer stuff
Will probably listen to it though
It's good but it's not as good as The Something Rain.
The bassline propelling Were We Once Lovers is gorgeous, and is the swagger to this one that Show Me Everything was to the last one.
Three instrumentals out of 11 tracks (2 of which are lovely)- Tindersticks can always churn out good instrumentals (my faves being Piano Music off of FDAM or Vertrauen II), but here they make the album feel a bit thin/short.
Album droops a bit in the middle. Highlights are at both ends of the record. Standouts for me: Second Chance Man, Were We Once Lovers, We Are Dreamers, Like Only Lovers Can.
I have always had a high opinion of what other people see as their patchy period (Can Our Love ---> Falling Down A Mountain), so it's a bit daunting to imagine placing it in amongst their other albums. The way the talked about this one... it feels a bit of a side-step than I imagined it was going to be. If anything, it's reinforced in me how much of a wonder The Something Rain was...
I can tell you really get what makes this band great. I too love pretty much everything this band has done. I love the loose, eclectic side of the band that put out falling down a mountain. That album is packed with great stuff. I've also been a huge fan of their soundtrack work and I think Piano Song off of FDAM is one of my favorite pieces of instrumental music ever.
I've been salivating over this new album after hearing We are Dreamers. Thought this would be a darker, more ambient flavored album (especially since it's set to a film accompaniment). To hear it's a bit slight is disappointing but at this stage I'm just thrilled to have more music from them. And yes The Something Rain is a glorious album. Probably in my top 20 for the decade.
Admittedly it's a backwards step after The Something Rain, and it's a couple of tracks too long (Hey Lucinda is fucking awful), but it's a throwback to the Stax-influenced sound of Simple Pleasure/Can Our Love and that makes me very happy indeed. A good solid Tindersticks album - not up with their best work, but a lot better than their dodgy period.
What do you define as their dodgy period.... Waiting For The Moon onwards?
I dipped into WFTM the other day (just randomly) after listening to this one and was surprised how much I liked that one. Might be why this one had me a little bit deflated.
Though I think it was a post on their website where he mentioned it was a stride forward that did that... after the last one that just left me expecting something more urgent sounding.
as they've never made a bad album. But I'd say the albums they released 2003-2009 (WFTM, Falling Down a Mountain, Hungry Saw) are their 3 weakest.
Only noticed today how similar (and better than) Falling Down A Mountain (the song) is to Radiohead's Dollars & Cents.
sounds just like OMD's Souvenir. Which is a good thing in my book.
My Oblivion, Running Wild, Trying to Find A Home, Say Goodbye To The City, are among their best songs.
The two records post reformation were merely Ok and Can Our Love is the lesser one from the first period.
I just think it's one of their curate's egg albums that sounds like a random collection of songs, rather than a cohesive album like Tindersticks II or Simple Pleasure. Waiting Room is a bit like that too.
Waiting Room has got that collection feel.
It's got me having a back-catalogue-athon again.... She Rode Me Down... like capturing the spirit of album I all over again.
Tend to stick to I, II, Simple Pleasure & Something Rain and neglect the others. First project for 2016!
off the new one - what a tune. I actually LOL'd with delight when those horns came in first time I heard it.
I know its early days but i think you review is acurate. The best songs are at the beggining and the end, and they are a fine adition to the band's output, but the record as a whole is not as good as the Something Rain. I just wish they would have follow the direction of songs like We Were One Lovers and We Are Dreamers. They are darker and have a very manic energy. Still very worthwhile album if you are a fan.
I have it pre-ordered on Amazon (I hope you all have done the same).
Hungry Saw has really grown on me over the years. There is a 3 song stretch from The other side of the world on that is among the best on any of their albums. Other side is a devastating/beautiful song.
but obviously that's just to tide me over til it comes out proper.
Shall be re-discovering Hungry Saw on the train tomorrow. My favourite corner of that album is near the end- Boobar, All The Love....
Sounds like it could have been on Something Rain. How can I care if it's the caring that's killing me? This is them at their best. love it.
Could be straight off Simple Pleasure. Fear of Emptiness is amazing as well.
