Thank you !!
Sounds ok. Not a massive change from their debut, nothing as immediate as the two/three initial singles off of "Bones..." but it'll do pretty well I reckon.
The first half is very strong.
People keep comparing the stuff on here to 'The Mother We Share', but that's my least favourite single by CHVRCHES so I don't agree. 'Clearest Blue' is still absolutely fantastic, and I'm impressed by 'High Enough To Carry You Over'.
The production on 'Make Them Gold' is a bit iffy - it seems to drain the track of all the energy it seemed to have in the liver performance.
'Empty Threat' is the weakest thing on the album, and though 'Down Side Of me' builds into something nice, it's mostly a bit plodding and dull. Afterglow is a pleasant enough closer, but it's a bit of nothing really.
All in all, I'd give it 7 out of 10. It needs at least two more great tracks. Interested to hear the bonus stuff. 'Get Away' is decent of course, but 'Follow You', 'Bow Down' and the Target bonus, 'Up In Arms' could be very impressive. I was certainly pleasantly surprised by the bonus material on the debut - especially 'String Hand', which should have been on the album.
Starts strong but becomes incredibly lifeless and has no personality and fa frequently fails to come close to the highs from the first record 'High Enough To Carry You Over' is flat out awful and feels like it was spat out by indie synthpop tron 3000. Hugely disappointing album.
Though High Enough to Carry You Over derails the momentum a bit (luckily Empty Threat picks it back up)
and Empty Threat's one of the worst.
I think 6 out of 10 was a bit too harsh - Pitchfork''s review was closer to what I'd have given it (maybe a 7.5).
It's a good pop album with some of the best pop tunes releases this year, but I think the second half, though not bad, lacks some of the potency of the first half.
The bonus tracks are all impressive, so much so that I've been playing a playlist rather than the actual album, and I think if that playlist had been the album, I'd have given it about an 8.
Never Ending Circles
Leave a Trace
Keep You On My Side
Make Them Gold
High Enough To Carry You Over
Down Side Of Me
Up In Arms
Gettin' a lot of spins that.
'Up In Arms', which is only available on the Target Deluxe and German edition, is particularly good.
All in all, a solid follow up, which in 'Clearest Blue', happens to have one of the very best pop tunes of the whole year.
But everything about High Enough is awful.
And the Disclosure one are a bit disappointing for me (disclosure more so as I still think Settle is brilliant). I like clearest blue but so far im not really a fan of the heavily compressed production on some of the other tracks. I don't think either act will lose any popularity due to it though.
