What kit did/do you use?
Did you treat requests with barely concealed requests?
Share anecdotes and that below....
20 years plus. Originally House and techno but have diversified over the years as my record collection / tastes have changed. Now putting on funk / soul nights with a bit of old skool house thrown in as well.
Vinyl only. Technics 1200 Mk 5's
We've got a night coming up soon. As for requests. If I've got it I'll play it I suppose, but don't really get people asking for requests in the sort of places I've played recently. Used to get it loads in townie type night clubs years back.
I used to DJ at weddings and parties all of the time but I don't do so many gigs these days.
I use a Denon controller and a Macbook. Used to have 1210s and CD decks etc but I just don't need the hassle of them given the type of gigs I get.
Requests can be really useful, especially if you're stuck for ideas, but if I have strong doubts about playing something, and depending on how reasonable/drunk the person seems, I'll tell them that I can't find the track they want or that I don't think it'll go down well.
Landed a gig DJing on one of the floats at Brighton Pride a couple of weeks ago, which is by far my favourite gig to date.
aside from doing birthdays/rent-a-DJ type stuff, I mostly played indie/electro. These days mostly a mix of RnB\soul\hip-hop\future garage in a similar vein to LuckyMe\Eclair Fifi\Koreless etc.
Used to be vinyl now purely digital, most of my set-up is based around the Traktor Kontrol Z1 by Native Instruments which plugs into a laptop.
If I actually played more I'd probably get an X1 as well.
When I did the rent-a-dj stuff I took requests all the time, these days I generally only play for an hour or less, so whilst I'll play the tracks if I've got them generally people just leave me to it.
Probably be announcing some more stuff in autumn/winter.
