I cant think of one. The The: 'Soul Mining' is the best of a bad bunch.
Metallica - Kill 'em all
Minutemen - what makes a man start fires?
Daniel Johnston - Yip/Jump music
Sonic Youth - Confusion is Sex
Power, Corruption and Lies
R.E.M - Murmer
Violent Femmes - Violent Femmes
Talking Heads - Speaking in Tongues
Meredith Monk - Turtle Dreams
New Order - Power, Corruption and Lies
Loads of stuff I havent heard yet.
Aztec Camera - High Land, Hard Rain
Bowie - Let's Dance
The The is incredible.
But for it to be my favorite of that year just seems wrong. I picked it because its the year I have fewest albums from after 63. I only have:
The The - Soul Mining
Billy Bragg - Lifes a Riot With Spy vs Spy
Aswad - Live and Direct
John Holt - Police In Helicopter
and I only listen to the first two with any regularity.
Jonathan Richman & the Modern Lovers - Jonathan Sings!
Billy Bragg - Life's a Riot with Spy Vs Spy
or should I say fuckyeah!
Jerry's Kids – Is This My World?
Minor Threat – Out Of Step
D.R.I. – The Dirty Rotten
G.I.S.M. – Detestation
S.S. Decontrol – Get It Away
Anti-Sect – In Darkness There Is No Choice
Faith/Void – Faith/Void LP
Crucifix – Dehumanized
Faith/Void was 1982
Have Gauze - Fuckheads instead
you possibly forgot:
Black Flag - The First Four Years (it's gotta be allowed as it's so good)
Scream - Still Screaming
Husker Du - Everything Falls Apart
Going full on music board LIST CRAZY, I reckon it'd be possible to do a top 100 for 80-84 hardcore and pretty much everything on it would be amazing.
Gonna give you a pass re Black Flag beacuse it is definitely their best release (nothing against Henry Rollins, but...). Husker Du and Scream both great shouts
His best album as far as I'm aware.
Chameleons - Script of the Bridge
Tears For Fears - The Hurting
Cocteau Twins - Heads over Heels
Echo and The Bunnymen - Porcupine
Go betweens - Before Hollywood
Bauhaus - Burning from the Inside
You know what? knock yourself out
Yazoo - You & Me Both
Also, the Siouxsie and the Banshees live album from that year (Nocturne) is brilliant.
Hasn't aged particularly well but it marked one of the most interesting reinventions of the decade, from See You and Meaning of Love to Pipeline and More Than a Party in less than 12 months.
Cheap Trick - Next Position Please (not their best, but it does include I Can't Take It which is an all time classic)
Wipers - 'Over The Edge'
Bad Brains - 'Rock For Light'
Swans - 'Filth'
The Replacements - 'Hootenanny'
Billy Joel - 'An Innocent Man' (Odd one out in this list but I love Billy Joel.)
first two are great summer records, fyi
Antena - Camino Del Sol
The Durutti Column - Another Setting
Brian Eno - Apollo (Atmospheres & Soundtracks)
Cybotron - Enter
ESG - Come Away With ESG
Meat Puppets - Meat Puppets II
Psychic TV - Dreams Less Sweet
Tall Dwarfs - Hello Cruel World
Virginia Astley - From Gardens Where We Feel Secure
Zazou, Biyake + Cy1 - Noir et Blanc
Meat Puppets, Cybotron, Psychic TV and that Eno record, all amazing.
That Antena album's a great shout.
Some great shouts in here (OMD, Eno, Wipers, ESG, Branca,...)
Two more I'd like to add:
Moebius - Tonspuren
Popol Vuh - Agape-Agape (Love-Love)
Cuntby - One Nation Under a Cuntby
The Pre-Emptive Strikes - Please Leave the Boards
Sorry for any misunderstanding mroc.
