Who's playing? Which retired band will reform for one last hurrah?
White Stripes, Coldplay, Basement Jaxx (replaced by Kylie). Having a scroll through the lineup, it doesn't feel like a decade ago.
and their sound guy had to go and get it back. They were totally out of control, those boys.
Sandie Shaw & The Bottlemen the next
...but the number of acts that are popular here on DiS and could be big festival headliners in the future is still dwindling. I expect 2025 to be full of even more retro revisits and the kind of vapid "indie" that gets into the charts before anyone's heard the full album (Bastille, James Bay, Kodaline). But there are a few hopeful possibilities for the future:
Am I being too ambitious for these guys? They will need greater public awareness to be considered headliners, but that is possible (otherwise they'll never break the glass ceiling that holds back the likes of The National, Sigur Ros etc.). I'm not even sure what "headliner quality" is...but it'd be great to see these on the Pyramid.
They'd need another couple of actual proper hits to get there though. Could potentially see the xx getting there on goodwill alone, like Arcade Fire did. I'm not sure Foals ever will have another hit in the vein of My Number, I don't reckon What Went Down will have the mainstream impact of that, and they don't quite have the international profile to make them full on headliners without it.
The others, I don't think all are beyond the realms of possibility, certainly Wolf Alice and Chvrches I could definitely see starting to have mainstream hits over the coming decade given the right radio push, but the rest I think are very very very unlikely.
