What are your picks? Realised that apart from Wolf Alice most of my favourites so far this year are 3rd or 4th albums.
I'm also going to mention Alex Calder's Strange Dreams, even though the Captured Tracks release is a re-recorded version of the cassette that came out last year.
A few artists that are new to me but which aren't debut albums.
Ibeyi is the only one I can think of.
Natalie Prass - S/T
Dalton - S/T
American Wrestlers - S/T
Girlpool - Before the World Was Big
All are debut's to best of my knowledge ;-)
Just posted about it in the recommended albums thread but worth mentioning again. Angry, righteous take on gospel, blues and post punk. Excellent record.
Released yesterday and gave it a listen last night. Not bad at all! Embers is a banger.
Courtney Barnett - Sometimes I Sit...
Teal - Flowers Will Lay Upon Me
which was out in the first week of the year.
cos it's really good. like, really really good. depreston is the best song i've heard this year.
but as far as proper albums go, it is a debut
Viet Cong edition
debut (if allowed). The digital release was last November apparently but I only heard of them this year with the physical release of the album. Either way a brilliant British (female fronted) band. Worth checking out.
Songhoy Blues is more than decent, too.
dark psychedelic rock
Mr Mitch - was that a debut, I'm not sure really but fitted my trio of MMM so I'm having it.
It seems to have gone largely unnoticed unfortunately.
Radio friendly hooks with unhinged structures
Excellent krauty synth/drums duo from Baltimore. Toured in support of Dan Deacon and RULED HARD.

new Audio Antihero release from NY lo-fi indie pop duo. Excellent stuff, really vivid lyrics and dirty pop guitars.
It's his debut under this moniker so I'm counting it ok.
