For me it's:
implies they've got a wicked bassist and / or decent production on the drums
electronic, synth, synthpop, electropop, post punk, dreampop, shoegaze, techno, ambient, trance, electro, electro-rock, new wave, psychedelic, dreamy, 80s, 90s, 00s, [my fave bands names]
used to be "My bloody valentine" until that comparison started applying to every motherfucking indie band that was slightly noisier than Bon Iver.
matured / more mature (= gotten boring)
folk (= bland / dull)
ballad (= *snore*)
I'm not in a band, and very unlikely to ever be in one, but if I were, my goal would be to produce albums that were successively less "mature" than the preceding ones.
The two biggest are probably pop-punk and post-hardcore.
It used to be "jam", but now "jam" seems to be synonymous with "song".

"...bolting on of a female singer is a bit of an adherence to trend..." usually makes me want to read further.
I will always check it out/buy it on the spot. He may have gone a bit shit at the end but he's still a massive influence.
