Love Song was a noticeable record and stood out from the New Wave Pop stuff that surrounded it. Their really big stuff (Alive & Kicking, etc) was catchy but also a bit throwaway.
At the risk of a 'dis-ism' - their earlier stuff looks worth checking out.
even their debut is interesting to listen to as an album of its time.
So many parallels to The Cure really. A debut that is pop/punk (the 1970s version) but already wanting to lead the way into post-punk experimentalism. A quick follow up that boldly declared the band's intention to follow that desire, a couple more albums that continued to push that mould (including a borderline industrial album in the form of Sons & Fascination), before turning on a big stadium / commercial pop/rock sound in the mid-80s.
The big difference between the two is that the Cure managed to delay turning shit for a good decade or more, giving them time to produce a few super quality AND highly successful albums, whereas Simple Minds jumped right over to earnest U2 territory to become boring as shit.
haven't heard much outside that.
