It's an obscure one. But this is DIS, so you might have heard of it.
1. Another cover of this song was a UK number one
2. The original cover in question was recorded by a band with a similar or the same name to a band loved by many DISers but it's not a actually that one

The Pnau track suggested as an answer only samples the other song - it is not a cover version.

A cover of another song by the original artist was a US #1 in the 80s recorded by a British artist.
Tiffany version went to #1 in the UK.
Original was by Tommy James and the Shondells, who also did Mony Mony. Billy Idol's cover of Mony Mony went to #1 in the US in the 80s.
But I don't know which specific cover version you're thinking of.
