Sonic Youth probably have 8 good songs, max. and the only one you really need is Death Valley '69
I listened to Women once and thought 'this sounds like a lame-o rip-off of Sonic Youth'
that was entirely devoted to comparing the guitar sounds to the Sonic Youth album of the same tone.
True enough, it has to be a deliberate act to get such an exact similar sound - but also true enough that Women played some stunning songs that did not belong to Sonic Youth, so there's that.
Not quite sure what my point is.
I'll just say - Eyesore is such an incredible song.
Can't find a link for it at the moment. It was a podcast on CBC 3, has a page on last fm with 68 listeners. That's a disgrace, seek it out.
(Bullfight) is amazing also: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zavndb-By8s
Saw Women play at Primavera a few years back but memory of it is a little hazy now to be honest
this is not a bad thing
With Wavves supporting. There was a buzz about both bands at the time and both were awful live.
Didn't one of the Women members die or summin?
He was around 26 if I remember correctly - awful stuff.
After checking out Viet Cong I went back and listened to the first Women album and nothing compares really. I'm genuinely sad that they aren't a thing anymore.
Does anyone have any suggestions for similar bands who do that white noise + pop melodies thing well? And yes I've heard Sonic Youth.
Cheers though :)
Persistant Malaise is a fantastic album. They are currently recording the follow up with a bassist, saw them play some new songs live back in April and they were longer and krautier.
Dan Reeves from Cold Pumas and runs Faux Discx other band Soft Walls are incredible.
Androgynous Mind features Pat from Women
Faux Fur - Faux Fur
All of that lot is released on Faux Discx, no suprise as head honcho Dan Reeves favourite album is Public Strain - as stated in this interview
Faux Discx host a day of label related content at Shacklewell Arms in March
Freak Heat Waves
All that lot are from Canada, where it seems a lot of bands have been influenced by Women
Will be checking out Vision Fortune and Soft Walls later.
their first record dragged a little though - bu I think their second record could be something really special if the chemistry is right
Thought it was good not great but I'll revisit now. Cheers for the other stuff, I look forward to going through it.
such a great band, found them through this site when Mike Diver was editor.
gone but not forgotten. a true hero.
