...and has been coming off like this in interviews for at least 20 years. That said, 'Tim Jonze' almost certainly deserves all he gets.
there was really no going back after that
That is painful , fun as it may have been out of print.
"I don't care because I do care"
"I don't give a fuck and I'm a street artist but give me my due for being here 25 years"
"Oh fuck off! Seriously now … that’s a stupid thing to say. Seriously. You’re basically saying that I’m willing to be coddled. Do I seem like someone who wants to be coddled? "
you do a bit actually
I have some sympathy for corgan, he wrote some of the best music of his era, was way more ambitious and prolific than his peers yet he will never go down in history as an all time great for some reason and he is obviously bitter about it
is considered a classic, and rightly so.
His current music is just not that novel or interesting. He has no right to get good reviews.
The pixies are considered indie rock royalty yet indie cindy was rightly slated by critics.
He is being petty and silly here.
seemed like good sparring.
Sad to see he's still frustrated, but kinda understand why.
he has a good point about the three-star reviews. he should just let it go though.
that's probably the worst photo of Billy Corgan ever seen
Bit of respect please kids.
he doesn't come across nuts at all, just a bit emotional and turbulent. I think he's actually quite a good egg in all, he even says he was enjoying the interview.
I'm inclined to give that new album another listen.
Actually made me like Billy Corgan a lot more, and I've always been an apologist for him and late period SP in general.
some awful questions especially the Columbine reference. Can understand Billy's frustrations, but the new record was a bit disappointing.
It definitely is
I also don't recall anything pre-MCIS getting 3 star reviews on average back then either; definitely not Siamese Dream.
during interviews its kind of refreshing reading this one.
He might be an ass but at least he doesn't hide it. Good for him.
And this article sort of proves this. He may as well have said "Don't you know who I am?". 25 years of being a dick is still 25 years of being a dick - you don't win respect via longevity.
Smashing Pumpkins had a good run for the first three albums (ish) but then sort of became a parody of what an alternative band should look (I will NEVER recover from the video of Billy Corgan wearing a floor length PVC skirt) and sound like.
Weirdly, the sort of music that he pedals now has more in common with pain by numbers EDM than anything else.
as the interviewer himself states in the footnotes, the stuff Billy is saying is a lot more light-hearted and he's playing more than it will come across in print
the whole Pavement episode was a joke.
this interview is light hearted and a lot of fun. Swearing always comes across worse in print.
Even weirder as they are my two favorite bands of my teens
Because they are both bald?
both convinced of their own brilliance despite every single thing they've ever touched being unremittingly awful, both harbour ongoing feuds with Stephen Malkmus, etc, etc.
because it, er, took a long time, and it involved a computer, and it was foolish
Good one for Burnley before that as well.
just a three star goal.
...just really sad. Interviewer seems like a dick, Corgan met his being a dick by being a bit of a dick himself. Mellon Collie getting 3 stars? Don't recall this. It's clearly the most ambitious, tremendous thing they've ever done. Their new album, not so much.
