How recent? Xiu xiu probably win on gloomy ness for all time they've existed.
preferrably within the past 2 years
the dead texan
loving their latest. Perfect melancholic winter album.
not as good as deathconcsciousness overall but that is a bit of a master piece though
The fact that there won't be any more of it seems to make his music sound even more precious than it did already. I've been absolutely bingeing on his back catalogue these last couple of weeks - astonishing how good it is. Talk Talk, Galaxie 500, Michael Head, Nick Drake, it's all in there. What an utterly tragic loss.
Flashlight Sessions and Black Holes in the Sand are brilliant. Just brilliant. Still can't believe Nick's gone.
out of Western Lands all week. Amazing album.
if your in that sort of mood, i cannot recommend them highly enough.
thanks for recommending it
Im randomly listening to songs across his albums, and everything is stunning. Where has this been all my life!
A hearty shake of the hand to you, my friend.
not sure if that link works or not. Anyway, Skelton started making music after his wife died, so there's gloomy melancholia for you right there. The music sounds like he's trying to converse with the landscape - a trancendental but potentially futile task. heavy stuff. is amazing.
I just got his new one Nimron under The Inward Circles
Only had chance to play it once but its beautiful. Landings is one of my all time favorites.
Recent EPs have been consistently great - longer tracks with various different bits ('suites' apparently).
You've got Street Halo, Kindred, Truant and Rival Dealer (solo) and Four Walls/Paradise Circus (Massive Attack remixes). There's some collabo stuff with Four Tet, but it isn't that gloomy.
Is one of the great break-up albums of all time. Really sad and beautiful
The Black Heart Procession
Casiotone For The Painfully Alone
...so there's always that. A couple of as-yet unreleased tracks that are on our forthcoming album are a suicide note I wrote to my wife when my stomach pain because too much to bear (Poly) and a detailed account of how I planned to off myself (Sleeper), but our current material is equally harrowing. For a while after my (eventual, overdue) hospitalisation that really turned things around, I wouldn't play a huge amount of our material live. Now, I realise how important it was at the time for me to write this stuff.
If you're up for some The Holy Bible/Pornography grade misery, this will probably fit the bill. The music itself is pretty icy and unforgiving, too.
