Another week, another music venue in London is swept aside by gentrification:
Any news on what this is? Crossrail? Flats?
but, like the Intrepid Fox under Centrepoint, redevelopment following in its wake.
This is a pretty decent summary: http://greatwen.com/2014/08/26/denmark-street-and-regeneration-slow-death-or-triumphant-rebirth/
Would love it if Denmark Street became a conservation area. But no chance.
Be interesting if that developer will seek to put that `new music venue` he mentions on the site of the 12 Bar. Doubt it.
Tear down our nightclubs, put up flats
Burn down our pubs and put up flats
All rows of neat new tracts
Why'd you want to live here if there's nothing but housing?
the opening to War Pigs is probably the best lyric ever
Generals gathered in their masses,
Just like witches at black masses
With mits. I lost my purse.
RIP 12 Bar Club :'(
they were even given assurance, once the campaign to save it began, that it would be spared. Which was a great way for them to reduce the amount of protesting going on until they dropped the bomb at the last minute, which they obviously knew they'd be doing all along.
Two things: 1) I've been to the 12 Bar Club many times and I love it, and this is shit news. 2) Many of the things written since have been rants about coffee shops. I don't actually mind coffee shops. I don't drink all that much and it's nice to have somewhere where you can meet people if you don't always want to drink, so the rise of them in recent years hasn't been a bad thing per se. BUT you're never more than a stone's throw from one, and you don't need them everywhere... and you definitely don't need them here.
tl;dr - I love the 12 Bar Club and this is shit news.
