Top 50 is now live http://drownedinsound.com/in_depth/4148558-drowned-in-sounds-50-favourite-albums-of-2014
proper surprised, particularly as joyce manor and radiator hospital made it in.
but it was also bigged up on the debut albums list, so it hasn't gone unnoticed, hopefully.
Seems like the winner this year is white people with guitars! Who saw that coming!
But its a shame as its been a really diverse and interesting year. They seemed to have dropped a lot of the more interesting stuff by Flying Lotus or Young Fathers has been placed lower for the sake of an half decent Interpol album.
Also the a lot of the best electronic releases have been ignored entirely. Such as Andy Stott, Clark, Objekt & Fennesz. Nevermind the almost complete lack or rap/hip-hop records.
But I guess Drowned in Sound has always been tailored towards an indie rock crowd, regardless of the musical diversity of the community. The list isn't at bad in its self, if guitar bands are your main thing but occasionally feel like listening to something different, its perfect.
and IMO a lot of average albums are in the Top 50. But it's a music list, it's a subjective thing and my views are subjective so yeah whatever.
and decided to stop at 20 blurbs. Then realised it would be a bit confusing. Gah!
It seems a bit nuts to have 50-21 after the number 1.
Would just swap the article around to do intro, then list 50-21, then 20 blurbs.
Gimme a mo to shunt it around. #brainfried
gonna listen to it this afternoon
The ep is pretty good 2 - if they'd have swapped a couple of tracks from the ep to the lp it'd be AOTY by miles.
really, really, really great album. Still need to pick it up myself but I've hammed it on spotify at work.
Great band, great album. Well deserved.
and say this list is pretty much spot on.
I mean, stuff like Taylor Swift, Alvvays, interpol might be very good, but there no top 20 material. There's a lot of better/more interesting records made this year!
Also Sean: you got the artwork for the AWVTS' Atomos wrong, the artwork is from the Atomos VII EP, not the full album
Of the year some kind of inside joke that I'm missing out on. I don't know if it's different in England but in the U.S ,Taylor Swift's music is held in about as high regard as One Direction.
But I guess as Taylor would say " haters gonna hate hate hate hate hate."
to like her.
However, as the person said below, her "Red" album is better.
I don't think it's a top 10 album, but it's about eleventy billion times better than 1D.
I didn't put my choices in. .·´¯`(>▂<)´¯`·.
Pretty sure this is all the work of the DiS staff and the user's AOTY list gets announced later on a sort of non-official, banterous thing.
that's pretty good going.
I should listen to Twilight Sad, because I really liked them before I ust stopped listening to them for no reason at all.
Off the back of them I shall be listening to:
East India Youth
asap as they sound intriguing. I would like to see a similar thing for the whole lot, these lists are great for finding a chunk of things that pique my interest.
A lot of promise (and he was good live when I saw him) but the album is pretty poor.
Its a very mixed bag of an album, where none of the pieces quite fit, but as a whole that makes it oddly exciting as there are unexpected changes and twists. The second half is a little bit drab though, his ideas seem half baked and come across as extended experimentations rather than quality tracks. But I really enjoyed the album as an experience. Not inspite of its faults but because of them.
Ought reminds me of Clap Your Hands Say Yeah (remember them?). Alvvays is growing on me a lot. I don't get the love for the Twilight Sad. I found another recommendation of Whirr, they are pretty good so far, if a little bog standard shoegaze.
I counted that seven out of the top 20 were voted as Album Of The Month by DiS users. The list probably by accident than design reflects users' views too I guess. Taylor Swift was my top album. I wasn't expecting it to be that high in this list. Anyway, overall, a very good list.
You did a great job of that all you. Thank you.
but what I really loved was how they were numbered in different fonts to blend with the artwork of that particular album. A little thing, sure, but a lovely touch.
I like all of those albums, but I find Red, Tramp and No One Can Ever Know to be much better, pretty much their respective peaks for me.
Literally my 2012 top 3, though, bizarre times.
shocking lack of rap & electronic in that list, particularly noticeable by me as this year i got pretty into a lot of electronic acts finally
But conicidentally I loved all three of the hip hop albums I heard this year - DJ Quik, Shabazz Palaces and Freddie Gibbs. Don't think I heard any others, there's probably some great ones I missed as well.
Anyway, I don't think any of those made the list?
There wasn't much rap and hip hop mentioned. And our hip hop columnist has left / didn't vote. I usually rely on their specialism to suggest what should make the cut. Which hip hop albums do people feel are missing?
Also, not hiphop, but I really, really liked Kelis - Food.
Not seeing it mentioned in many end of year lists, so I guess this is a minority opinion.
Kelis was a contender but alas, like about 200 other albums we coulda included, didn't make the cut.
In my top 3 for the year.
The Neneh Cherry album was another personal favourite that seems to be absent in the end of year polls.
Do It Again should definitely have made it somewhere on a list of 101...
i.e. launch an immediate re-count after D'Angelo released Black Messiah?
DiS' usual end of year lists
All Tomorrows Boxes... :/ Surprised Syro and Clarks new album didn't rank higher actually, probably make my top 5.
