Also do keyboards (as in the instrument) plug into amps?
have a nice thread
for potential answers.
Not sure if this encompasses midi controller/software combo. About £100 over budget but I've found a mini ipad, korg gadget app, with nanokey2 and nanopad2 controllers a lot more fun and playable than my massive keyboard. The nanopad especially surprised me how easy it is to do percussion
To expand on the gadgets app, it has 15 synths ranging from the pointless gimmicky to actually really good. covering analog and digital synth sounds, drum machines and one that has some real sounding stuff piano strings etc. I like that they've split it out into lots of seperate virtual synths, it's like having loads of different volcas and doesn't get overwhelming with options.
For an actual hardware synth a micro korg is a safe bet
Wish they would make real versions of the Helsinki and chaing mai gadgets
We all play synth
