Imagine a crap Joy Division / parallel universes
Imagine Ian Curtis had no epilepsy, medication, personal issues and lived. However he just quits Joy Division and is replaced with whipersnapper Bono from lesser known Irish outfit U2 who fold shortly after. Bernard Sumner quits after difficult third album "Boy Movement". Pounding electronic stadium disco oddity "Brown Monday" is the final straw for Hooky and he quits before the shambolic infamous Live Aid show.
Joy Division left a perfect legacy. It could have all been so different!
^ rejected script for episode of Sliders
I'm sure you just meant to just think that and not actually type it.
Peter Hook: renown slapbass enthusiast.
Imagine Nirvana recorded a third album
Er..they did
It was called Bleach.
Imagine John Lennon
didn't record Imagine.
Imagine Dragons
are shit
Imagine Flea wasn't the best bassist
Imagine Flea
Joining Joy Division.
Could only improve things, obviously.
i do, repeatedly
news flash: playing with patti smith does not make one a punk apostle. heard her records lately?
I can't imagine what their follow up to Closer would've been like
That's like trying to imagine a new colour.
As a side note Unknown Pleasures feels like a second album to me. If you combine An Ideal for Living and songs from their Unknown Pleasures sessions (which appear on Still), you get an interesting album which could be thought of as a hidden debut. Has a punky start and then moves into rougher territory.
In fact I made a track list of it:
Warsaw
No Love Lost
Leaders of Men
Failures
Digital
Glass
Exercise One
The Only Mistake
Walked in Line
The Kill
pieced together in rough chronological order from An Ideal for Living and Still (the dates of each song are noted on Wikipedia). I'm sure many Joy Division fans already know these tracks but I'd recommend giving them a listen in that order, it's quite coherent.
"I can't imagine what their follow up to Closer would've been like"
I don't think Movement was really that far off; maybe if Ian were still involved it might be bit more well-rounded
Just listened to it properly
Wow, you're right. Had no idea how good that album is. It actually does feel like a logical progression of Closer, like a futuristic version. Heck, why isn't it more acclaimed?!
Movement
is not what I imagine a 3rd Joy Division studio album would have sounded like. It would have that cold feel (which is a strength of the album) though. I seriously consider New Order really found that album hard to make for many reasons and almost jacked it all in. It's a good album but nothing like the majestic other wordly qualities of Joy Division. I've mused this before but had they come through whatever Ian Curtis couldn't get through Blue Monday, with his vocals would have been truly incredible (let alone him dancing to a live performance / video of that track.
It's not a masterpiece like Closer but I still think it sounds pretty timeless.
And I think Chosen Time wouldn't look out of place on the first half of Closer. It sounds both royal and futuristic, and of its own universe, as does most of the album.
Arguably underrated and under heard of.
The Him
is probably the best track on Movement. Barney was brave to take over vocal duties for sure.
I think the album's recording was definitely affected by the loss of Ian, but mostly just in the performances (which are otherwise good.) Otherwise I don't think Movement is really that far off and mostly builds off of Isolation and Heart & Soul.
Warsaw was meant to be their first album
but it was taking so long to get released that they scrapped it and recorded Unknown Pleasures. So it pretty much is a second album.
Imagine Radiohead
hired a drummer
Imagine Radiohead
after OK Computer went back to their roots to revisit the sound of Pablo Honey.
hovering my mouse over thread title
I read "Imagine Ian Curtis had no epilepsy, medication, personal issues and lived. However he just quits Joy Division and is replaced with whipersnapper Bon..."
was a tiny bit disappointed when I clicked
I didn't hover and just assumed from the title
that this was a thread about Interpol.
Imagine if Bon Iver came onstage to a sold out audience...
Peter Hook quits and is replaced by Mark King
I guess the notion
behind this thread *could* be - if bands lengthy careers could be cut short or albums omitted could they then be held in higher regard? For example, if Radiohead had stopped after The Bends and OK Computer (ignoring Pablo Honey), etc.
You did that exact thread not so long ago
You had STRONG opinions on when The Cure should have stopped.
I think Kid A propelled them to even further brilliance
While they went on to write exceptional stuff after Kid A, I'll admit I can just about live without Amnesiac, HttT and In Rainbows. Just.
