DiS Users October Album Of The Month

BMS1 [Edit] [Delete] 34 replies 14:58, 26 October '14

Vote now!

The same rules/format as the previous months. Feel free to mention as many albums as you like but please make your one album of the month clear as it helps with tallying up the scores easier. Also, if you list a bunch of albums without specifying your favourite I'll take the first one mentioned as your album of the month unless otherwise stated. (Sorry to be such a pedant.)

My album of the month is Ex Hex - Rips
A brilliant 90s indie style record from Mary Timony. I've heard it quite a few times and it gets better with each listen. I liked The Magic City album she did when in Helium but Rips is even better. Probably sacrilege to type here but I'm looking forward to seeing Ex Hex live more than the reformed Sleater Kinney next year (Wild Flag being the link between the two).

I enjoyed the new Mark Lanegan album. The disappointments of the month were the new Allo Darlin' and Zola Jesus albums. I gave the Caribou album a listen too as it got great reviews from most but it just didn't click with me.

I'm looking forward to some good recommendations from you guys and I'll keep this thread open until Sunday 2nd November so that people have almost a week to listen to tomorrow's releases before picking their favourite. As usual forgive any shameless bumps by myself during the week.

  • Medicine - Home Everywhere

still ahead of the pack even among the current crop of Shoegaze bands.

Most Disappointing: Flying Lotus - You're Dead!

I know I'll be alone in this, but I think it falls apart after the first third or so and never quite regains its momentum despite a few good individual moments after. But then again I liked Until the Quiet Comes much more than everyone else it seems.

  • Scott Walker + Sunn0))) - Soused

Scott's most listenable album for years. Obviously it's all relative but for me it's the most enjoyable thing he's done since Climate of Hunter.

    ThirstyDog | 26 Oct '14, 15:53 | X
  • Run The Jewels 2

But really closely battling with You're Dead.

Finally feel like I'm hearing albums that can be considered albums of theyear. RTJ 2 especially just hits so hard, while the FlyLo is a properly built conceptual album

    rainmaker | 26 Oct '14, 20:07 | X
  • Scott O))) definitely

A brilliant album. I agree that it's the first since Climate of Hunter that you can enjoy (rather than admire)

HMHB is a good record too, a bit patchy but the best bits are brilliant

    bornin69 | 26 Oct '14, 21:10 | X
    • I enjoyed bits of The Drift

Tilt is an amazing record but listening to it leaves me feeling utterly miserable for days afterwards. Just can't get into Bish Bosch at all. Had the house to myself over the weekend & played Soused at high volume & it sounds utterly fantastic. Even found myself singing along at some points.

      ThirstyDog @bornin69 | 27 Oct '14, 04:25 | X
      • My feelings are just about the same

I liked Tilt, but I can't remember when I last listened to it. The Drift was even more gruelling but you could still find moments of beauty. I had a real 'Emperor's New Clothes' moment with Bish Bosch - it just sounded ugly, pretentious and meaningless to me and I thought that might be it for me and Scott (after 20 odd years of devotion).

Soused isn't exactly easy listening (which is fine) but is focussed, powerful and really exciting. I actually find myself wanting to put it on rather feeling I really should listen to it more out of a sense of duty.

It's one of the best 5 or 6 albums of the year in a strong year

        bornin69 @ThirstyDog | 27 Oct '14, 07:33 | X
        • Yeah

Feel the same way about Bish Bosch. I welcome the sound of artists disappearing up their own arseholes for a while but Scott journeyed way too far up the colon on that one. Thankfully he's headed back towards the sphincter with this one, and what with his voice sounding on fine form & him rediscovering tunes again, he may even make it back to the arse cheeks next time. I really wish I hadn't started with this metaphor now.

  • What a great month, especially the return of RTJ!

The summer's been pretty devoid of great albums for me, but this month was full of them.

Run the Jewels take my #1 spot, easy choice. I liked the first album quite a lot (not as much as some), but this feels like an improvement in almost every way. I love how cohesive it is.

Second place goes to K9 - Mad in the Cut. Embarrassed to say I'd never heard of this guy before, but he spits fire over beats by some of my favourite producers right now (Dark0, Mssingno). Outdoes Bobby Shmurda on 'Block Nigga' as well.

The Vince Staples EP could easily have taken first place another time. 'Blue Suede' is still my favourite but really there's not a single weak track. Great listen.

    Other stuff I've enjoyed:
CYPHR (newest post-Night Slugs EP from the Her Records camp)
    Caribou
    Single Mothers
    Tinashe
    DJ Quik
Heterotopia (free mixtape compiled by Astral Plane Recordings)

Haven't heard FlyLo or Cooly G yet, both of which I'm looking forward to a lot.

  • I'll have to go with

A Winged Victory For The Sullen in the top spot

    then in order
    Run the Jewels
    Grouper
    Kiasmos

    static | 27 Oct '14, 07:40 | X
    • Kiasmos stream coming to DiS in a bit

      *just coding it*

      sean @static | 27 Oct '14, 09:17 | X
  • It's a three way battle between

Run the Jewels, The Twilight Sad and Ex Hex for me.

Also enjoyed Caribou, We Were Promised Jetpacks, John Knox Sex Club and (despite it not being up there with their best) Half Man Half Biscuit.

Haven't had proper time to sit down with Winged Victory for the Sullen or Allo Darlin; yet.

    Good month.

    Lambchops | 27 Oct '14, 08:03 | X
    • Did you want to pick one out of the three that

you mentioned? Being a pedant I'll count Run The Jewels as your top pick otherwise. Sorry for the pedantry.

      (Excuse for a bump.)

      BMS1 @Lambchops | 30 Oct '14, 06:23 | X
      • Missed the bump

But I'll add a bump of my own to say that I've eventually gone for The Twilight Sad, who narrowly take it from Run The Jewels.

I've played the latter more but (perhaps thanks to the gloomier nights) it's the latter that is lodging itself into my brain.

        Lambchops @BMS1 | 30 Oct '14, 19:04 | X
  • Twilight Sad for me (out today)

Best thing they've done, and one of my albums of the year. Hits from the same shadows as Interpol and The Cure, but has that Scottish heft that makes it something very much their own.

    sean | 27 Oct '14, 09:18 | X
  • october was a fucking incredible month

i'm going for A Winged Victory for the Sullen.

    other choices:
    Twilight Sad

    Run the Jewels

    justanothersheeldz | 27 Oct '14, 11:00 | X
  • probably just Flying Lotus

  • These...

    Objekt - Flatland [PAN]
Mad broken techno thing that sounds like a space station breaking up in a high budget sci-fi film.

2562 - The New Today [When In Doubt]
Mad broken techno thing that sounds like... wait.

I've still not heard Flying Lotus, Population One, Bing & Ruth and Cooly G, all of which I'm really looking forward to.

    jimitheexploder | 27 Oct '14, 18:09 | X
  • Album of the month and album of the year =

A Winged Victrory for the Sullen.

Such a strong (and expensive) month! Special mention to FlyLo, Caribou, Grouper, Panda Bear EP. Looking forward to hearing Twilight Sad new one too.

    Old_Man_Burner | 27 Oct '14, 19:37 | X
  • Kiasmos for me

Stunning album and had never heard of them before, love it when you get surprised like that. Twilight Sad and WVFS have also made brilliant albums for which in a normal month would have been shoe ins for album of the month x

    ditch_easter | 27 Oct '14, 19:52 | X
  • DJ Quik - The Midnight Life

    Natch.

    littlebirds | 27 Oct '14, 19:55 | X
  • Twilight Sad

Caribou was alright, not really sure why I bought it, was great at first but then lost its wow power.

Will give Ex Hex a listen tomorrow as it seems up my street.

Mark Lanegan was good, reviewed it for the site.

    yuggy | 27 Oct '14, 20:13 | X
  • The 2 Bears - The Night Is Young

is hands down the best album of October and definitely a contender for AOTY for me.

of the 'big' albums released this month, Scott Walker + Sun O))) - Soused is still taking time to sink in but feels somewhat more gratifying than Flying Lotus - You're Dead! which for me is a lacklustre followup to Until The Quiet Comes, with too much overt rapping on it (prefer it when Fly Lo uses vocalists as texture). Needed more Thundercat.

Other notables include A Winged Victory For the Sullen - Atomos which is superb but so far into my listening lacks the immediacy of ther s/t; and New Build - Pour it On which comes across almost like dubnobass era Underworld giving new wave a try. Some really good stuff on it but not quite as good as their first.

    Yvash | 27 Oct '14, 21:04 | X
  • Anybody want to buy the new Caribou LP off me?

Mint condition. £13 including delivery. I'll throw in a novelty 7" as well of my choice.

    yuggy | 28 Oct '14, 10:33 | X
  • Another vote for Soused

honourable mentions (in what was a brilliant month):

    Oozing Wound - Earth Suck
They got totally upstaged on their Split with Black Pus (who wouldn't?) but this is really good. A great use of elements of black metal, thrash and punk.

The Body / Sandworm - Split LP
The Body contribute a 15 minute track and Sandworm go for 10 shorter, blackened punk songs. All very good.

    Pharmakon - Bestial Burden
Not sure it's quite as good as Abandon but it's still excellent.

Wrekmeister Harmonies - Then It All Came Down
Brilliant album that needs to be listened to in one block. Travels from a drone/ambient to crushing doom sludge over 10 tracks.

    Inter Arma - The Cavern
Haven't given this enough listens but loving it so far. Inter Arma are one of those bands that's impossible to categorise but they do what they do really well.

Orange Goblin - Back From The Abyss
Definitely a rebirth for Orange Goblin without trying to reinvent the wheel. Classic doom/stoner stuff.

    commandercool | 28 Oct '14, 12:46 | X
  • In terms of number of listens

I think Grouper would win, but I've found it sort of washes over me (perfectly pleasantly but basically without incident).

My vote's going to have to go to RTJ2 'cuase it's so much fucking FUN.
