Least necessary/biggest self-promotion project out.
that soundtrack was really jarring, especially if you watch movies with subtitles on and see the lyrics.
they'll clearly be influenced by the original soundtrack meaning they'll just be doing sub-par, mangled versions of the original songs
it's fucking proper rubbish too
for the soundtrack
(I really like Cliff Martinez and obviously the ambient stuff on the soundtrack is his own work, but I'm pretty sure Jewel is responsible for the overall vibe of the film)
the director actually wanted to Jewel to do the music, and used his stuff on early cuts of the film until the studio basically hired Martinez to do a sound track in the same style (i.e. a bit of a rip-off)
I don't see why so many people have a problem with it though. It has the blessing from those involved with the original, and its not exactly going to ruin it, It'll be on for one night and then it will probably be forgotten. Plus, the new Chvrches song is as good as anything they've written. I'll probably watch it.
he just seems really smug, bit rockist, will endorse any old landfill indie willing to pay for a voice over
Or not being "selective" enough with tastes is a reason to hate people personally. But meh.
can't wait for radio 2's rescoring of blade runner curated by terry wogan
with Johnny Jewel guest-presenting and not being a total cock.
Sorry to get all precious about it, obviously just don't watch it etc etc. It's just that this is one of the finest film soundtracks ever - Martinez's great ambient stretches alongside some beautiful songs (A Real Hero, Under Your Spell, Nightcall). It complements the film perfectly, and does the talking for the characters.
I know Zane Lowe is saying he's not trying to better the original soundtrack, but seriously, why even bother? Smug, self-important crap. And don't even get me started on the bands he's assembled.
Feeling really embarrassed that this has pissed me off so much, I know it's a silly thing to care about. It's just so presumptuous of them to think that this was in any way a good idea.
I won't watch it. The soundtrack is brilliant and I know some scenes will die with a different sound running behind. A bad idea.
I did two modules on the use of music in film last year where we looked a lot at films with pop soundtracks. I love the idea of basically re-scoring a film like that. It happens a lot for older films with orchestral scores (Man With A Movie Camera is probably a good example of this, you can get dvds of it with like 4 different soundtracks on it), and seeing as the most definitive soundtracks in modern mainstream cinema are pop ones, why not do a similar thing?
Yeah, these bands probably aren't going to produce very good songs etc, but obviously it's not about the songs by themselves, it's about how they work with the film (I loved the use of Yellow by Coldplay at the start of Boyhood, for example, even though it's a crap song).
Also, come on- Drive was a fun film with a good soundtrack, but that's it, it's not an untouchable work of art which shouldn't be messed with. I'm really looking forward to seeing how much the film itself changes with the use of different songs.
it IS a really interesting idea, and there's been quite a few re-jiggings that have worked really well- I'm thinking of going to see Vex'd score an older sci fi at the BFI soon.
Also agree with your point about not particularly good music being really effective in films- that Coldplay song is a great example.
However...in this case they seem to have completely fucked it up. They have chosen Drive in particular to re-score because it had a great, distinctive soundtrack (it's a good film, not a great one). The artists that they have chosen in no way reflect the ethos/style of Johnny Jewel, etc., it's just a mish mash of flavours of the month.
It's a bit like when a really skilful footballer in the school playground does an amazing trick and then some average kid comes along and tries to replicate it- it's not going to work.
Basically Zane Lowe's an idiot.
the new soundtrack seems very un-curated.
when you start considering what else you could change - how about re-syncing a new actor to Ryan Gosling's acting? Because the music of Drive is pretty integral to the movie's appeal and style. Like a lot of good films, it is very important.
I understand why they've chose this film, it's because it's got an interesting soundtrack already and is regarded as a good film... but it'd be more interesting if they'd rescored something totally different.
