that they're both in on
in the way that TWOD haven't actually responded
showed they were actually a bit hurt by it because they are Kozelek fans.
I hope the diss track is all a joke that TWOD are in on, because I like them, and I like Mark Kozelek.
i wouldn't be that sure they are in on it
he's gone a bit kanye
I thought it would all be alright and kinda funny if they actually seemed to find it funny and got him on stage with them last night, which doesn't seem to have happened.
their (mostly) silence about it makes the stereogum analogy of him acting like "a drunken asshole on the subway" seem pretty on-the-money, though i'd be lying if I said I personally found it that offensive or annoying. Just a bit weird that he keeps going after a band that have (pretty much) ignored him and not really given anything back
song's alright and pretty funny in places. only thing i take issue with is how annoying white people who say things are "the whitest" are, especially coming from the guy who was in Red House Painters ffs.
Think the worst thing about it is how much he's desperately playing up to the recent (non-)incidents cos they've been getting press on Pitchfork this year. Just seems pretty desperate and attention seeky; like he's always been miserable and insulty on stage but no-one's cared for 5 years cos he was making boring samey fingerpicking guitar stuff. No need for all the rubbish follow-up statements and t-shirts and shite like that
It's already really, really embarrassing for him, but then the way he keep dragging this out over the internet is just sad.
Is his diss-track actually any good?
and met them and stuff, so if this song is sincere then he's clearly just a bit of a wanker.
It's also a really tedious song, but I am quietly up for hip-hop style diss tracks bleeding into other musical genres.
mostly in a baffling wtf has got into him kinda way
as Mark Kozelek calls them.
I would say that this is a massive wind up.
its really funny
ps MK is apparently releasing a christmas album next month. this is way more interesting/hilarious.
...he announced that album LAST December. Like a whole year before it's actually released. Mental scenes.
usually when indie bands do christmas albums they go for the fucking 15th century austrian number nobody knows or likes.
But then apparently he was a complete dick to Jimmy LaValle over the album they made together too. So i'm more inclined to chalk this up to Kozelek's continued douchery.
As Stereogum points, if he does have any goodwill towards his fans, he has a funny way of showing it.
He's clearly not a man particularly worried by what people think of him. The kanye analogy earlier was spot on. I won't make any major character judgements but I reckon he meant it as a joke that got lost in translation. Although I wouldn't be too surprised if it wasn't a joke.
kanye also went into super ego mode after pitchfork gave him a great review
In much the same way people respond to what gets more likes on Facebook or retweets on Twitter, it would seem that this beef has spiralled to ensure both acts get attention.
It's a shame, as this kind of "journalism" just distracts from the music and a whole heap of people will be familiar with their names now, which is a good thing, but I doubt any of the gossip chasers will become life-long fans and just move along to the next spat.
Seems more like Mark Kozelek being an absolute melt. Can't see any journalists forcing him to carry on this weird 'beef'.
He was pretty much a total dickhead at the SBE last year. No-one else forces him to constantly slag off other bands, the city he's in, his audience, people who write about him on the internet...all of which he did. [Great musician though]
"There is an epidemic of people being 'offended' by things as some kind of hobby. "
No there isn't, Mark. This is just what people who don't want to face the fact they might have offended someone like to think. See it a lot on here from people who should know better too. Tiresome. You can offend someone and not mean it and it doesn't mean you're some kind of monster: stop taking offence in the form of claiming someone else is imagining an offence, frankly.
A right whingey bastard, but the absolute chief. His run of recent records is fucking astonishing. Kind of made my mind up he'd had his day, then he released about four insanely good records in about two years. He's the top dog. Kinda like how he offends so many people just by being miserable.
think that's why it's a bit embarrassing, cause he thinks he is
But it's still nowhere near as good as anything by Red House Painters, Ghosts of the Great Highway or April.
it's quite funny how everyone seems to have missed this fact: it's a joke. you know that top gear thing that stewart lee did that you all like where he goes "it's a joke. but - coincidentally - i do what richard hammond dead". mark kozelek's basically doing the same joke.
it's like - people discussing how good or not the joke song he did is. that's not really the point ya know? just him putting it out there is kinda the joke?
Strikes me as slightly bullying behaviour if anything.
Anyway, here's someone else's take on it:
and the implicit homophobia and misogyny within it, but the rest of the article is very confirmation bias-y.
What a prick haha
"i will say this for the mustache guy though, in between songs at some point, he offered kozelek $5 to play some specific song, but asked if he had change for a $50. not exactly a huge comeback, but enough of one."
Just quoting the original thread. Definitely a sharp comeback.
That is so great, insult definitely outstripped the comeback by a massive amount. This thread is making me want to listen to more of Mark Kozelek's music.
Kozelek couldn't have chosen a band with worse banter, tbf
