  • Hooray!

I was thinking it was just about time for a new one.

    Good track titles as always.

  • Nice!

After seeing them earlier this year I was worried they were really slowing down on writing new stuff, but maybe they just ain't really fussed with playing new 'uns until after the release.

  • :( this is their worst album by miles

first four tracks good, rest boring, last two okish, plus track 5 rips off magazine

    • Gave it a quick listen through on Spotify last night

As my pre-order hadn't yet arrived.

Always takes a little while to fully appreciate a HMHB album, some of my favourite lyrics aren't always the ones that stand out; but certainly first impressions have me concurring that it may not be their best.

I fully reserve my right to go back on those impressions, naturally!

      • That said as far as immediate lyrics goes you can't go wrong with

"Midge Ure looks like a milk thief"

  • Going to order this and Scott O))))

    For maximum contrast listening.

  • What do people think then?

    myyada | 23 Oct '14, 16:22 | X
    • I really like it

but more than a few people seem to think it's not up to the usual standard. It works for me.

      Damian @myyada | 24 Oct '14, 00:56 | X
      • Yeah, I really like it too...

But it's just good to have more Biscuit to listen to really :)

        Give me a spork!

  • Not as good as the last one '90 Bisodol'

but still 7/10. 'Westward Ho' and 'Old Age Killed My Teenage Bride' being stand outs for me.

    silverfoxqpr | 24 Oct '14, 11:17 | X
    • 90 Bisodol was so hard to top

Actually think this is their most bleak and 'hard edged' since This Leaden Pall.

      myyada @silverfoxqpr | 24 Oct '14, 14:17 | X
      • Which I would also place as one of their weakest along with Godcore and (controversially) their debut.

All relative of course as even slightly weaker HMHB is a treat.

        Lambchops @myyada | 25 Oct '14, 00:02 | X
  • But, but... 4AD3DCD!

Early Biscuit doesn't really compare to the later well-honed era, though. Godcore is a bit of a blip, too.

Just seen the lyrics to 'Old Age Killed My Teenage Bride'. Amazing. A classic.

  • Had some more time with this

The standout tracks are excellent - some others not so much, if only because you can't help compare the likes of the indie takedown of "Adam Boyle" unfavourably with previous such efforts like Bad Wools, Four Skinny Indie Kids and Evil Gazebo.

For me the standouts are Old Age Killed My Teenage Bride, Stuck Up a Hornbeam, The Unfortunate Gwatkin and personal favourite This One's For Now which is choc-full of fantastic lines that keep cropping into my head and making me smile

"And I cheer for a corner
I don’t know why, they rarely lead to a goal"

"Why does the winner of Mr Universe
    Always come from Earth?"

"At DFS a job I have landed
But I don’t get paid for the first five years"

    "You’re so beige
I bet you think this song’s about someone else
    Standard Liège"

All in one song, cracking stuff. Although "And "Abseil for no one," then she died" is probably my favourite line in the album.

    Lambchops | 11 Nov '14, 18:59 | X
    • my boyfriend played this in the car the other day and i keep thinking about "at dfs, a job i have landed, but i don't get paid for the first five years" and the one about the teenage bride being now 101 and not having learned difficult chords and watching cash in the attic.

  • I love HMHB

But I think in reality all of their albums are a bit patchy - they have fantastic highlights and some songs that just pass you by. The only real exception is Acthung Bono, which is pretty much great all the way through.

I think the new one is patchy as well. The highlights - Teenage Bride, Mileage Chart, Westward Ho! - are absolutely fantastic and enough to make the album worthwhile. A lot of the rest of it is a bit forgettable
