Not been there in a while, but saw some pretty great gigs there:
it meant it was feasible to get the 11.05 last train back to Sheffield.
Shame, but the Bru has (rightly) swallowed up all the good gigs in that area. The Cockpit was always a bit shite, but saw lots of good gigs there.
My friends were too stoned and had to leave.
Nearly went to see the bluetones there once.
but it was quite unpleasant when it was busy in there
I spent far too many nights there at uni. I saw a ton of decent gigs, drank gallons of sub-par whiskey and coke, struck out with dozens of women, jumped around to the same mediocre rock hits, and loved pretty much every minute. I did try and go back last year though and it was shite.
... that it is no longer viable to deliver you the level of service you deserve with the building in its current condition.'
probably came to that realisation about 20 years too late, but at least it's going out the way it lived. It was fairly shit, but there's a lot to be said for shit venues, I worry everything's too nice these days. Some good memories etc.
just tell us like it is, cockpitters
It always stank of piss.
Went back last year for the first time in a decade, and it still stank of piss.
*pours drink on floor*
enjoyed it though.
As it always is when venues close. It had its problems and many were critical of its sound, but as others have said, i have seen lots of great things there including, lcd soundsystem, sleater kinney, sunn 0))), earth, battles, the blood brothers, daughters, dillinger escape plan, death from above 1979, …trail of dead etc etc etc. these types of gigs are still being put on in leeds however; its not like its a death knell for the scene.
Best of all meeting my girlfriend of 9 years there.
But Leeds doesn't need the Cockpit, especially with the Belgrave now in full operation.
but it was probably seeing Vessels for the first time having never heard of them at Live at Leeds. Just stood there, mouth open in awe.
Mostly just loved going to shitty clubnights on a Tuesday night and jumping around to One Armed Scissor though.
it was a sizeable venue but always felt intimate
saw some great stuff there. first gig was the Blood Brothers, last band I think was Rival Schools before I went to uni.
the nights were fun too. its a shame
