Let's try to guess the tracklist / choose our own favourites etc.
Wonder if there will be any licensing issues, given the different labels they have been on, restricting the tracklisting.
And Jeff replied 'where have you been man? These are the hits'. So greatest hits is fine IMO.
because they're not going to devote 12 whole minutes of it to One Sunday Morning
fortunately you can go and listen to that song any time you like
best ofs are completely irrelevant now
This could well be Wilco's flagship release.
Hopefully most people would just go for YHF first and then just buy everything else from there rather than a Best Of.
Never feel the need to listen to the rest of them tbh tbf.
The others have some tunes. (Speaking as someone who agrees completely with your ranking of the top 4).
Really excited about that. Saw Wilco in Leeds in 2009 and it was one of the best gigs I've ever, ever been to.
Looking forward to this. Always hugely enjoyable live. Funny fucker too.
Summerteeth/YHF/A Ghost is Born
So if it was a best of containing some good songs from the other albums, that'd be alright.
Impossible Germany is amazing off Sky Blue Sky, this live video of it especially:
Nels at the end :o
but since it is, I reserve the right to say how it should be done. Which is, as many have suggested, go heavy on YHF, Summerteeth and Ghost is Born, with choice selections from Being There and Sky Blue Sky, 'Bull Black Nova' from Wilco (The Album) and maybe the title track and 'Art of Almost' from TWL.
Presuming this will be called Wilco (the Best of), incidentally
1- Casino Queen
5- Shot in the arm
6- Via Chicago
7- How to fight loneliness
8- California Stars ¿? (i hope they include something from mermaid av)
9- I'm the man who loves you
10- Heavy Metal drummer
11- I am trying to break your heart
12- Jesus etc
13- Handshake drugs
14- Company in my back
15- Impossible germany
16- Bull black Nova
17- The art of almost
and a new one
I'd bring in 'You Are My Face' for 'Company in my Back'. 'Spiders (Kidsmoke) is an obvious choice, but maybe too long for a best of. And what about 'Hummingbird'?
this is gonna have to be a 2 disc affair
3-Shot in the arm
4-Red-eyed & blue
6-How to fight loneliness
8-I am trying to break your heart
9-War on war
11-Ashes of American flags
12-At least that's what you said
14-Company in my back
17-Bull black nova
18-The art of almost
20-One sunday morning
but I think Jesus etc. should be on the album
The problem would be keeping it down to anything less than a triple album. Too many wonderful songs.
I think andres' guess, above, is probably pretty close to what it WILL be.

this will be the release I'll be purchasing (4 discs is pretty generous I think)
Nels Cline's isolated guitar playing
uncontroversial selection. Missing Spiders Kidsmoke and One Sunday Morning, but who ever thought they would include songs over 10 min?
Walken, War on War, Whole Love and You Never Know, maybe Can't Stand It, and replace them with Spiders and One Sunday Morning.
Quite pleased how close I got in my guess, although stupid of me to include Mermaid Avenue tracks that Bragg sung.
You Are My Face is infinitely superior, to name just one other from that album
Bull Black Nova would have been a good choice
that is a massive omission
Though Jeff obviously does from the number of times they play it. Whole Love is good, but given the choice between those two and Spiders? I know what I'd go for.
But not terribly rare. Apart from live tracks there's b-sides, soundtrack tunes, and material from the bonus tour EPs that they did, which you can get on their website anyway. Hopefully there's an acoustic version of Spiders. Wish they'd put Laminated Cat/Not for the Season on there.
I really like it. Always have. Has it been reappraised by folk yet?
Probably my 3rd favourite Wilco album. Gets a rough time though. But then again I'm not a fan of A Ghost Is Born so maybe I should be banished from this thread. When I saw them at End of the Road the other year I was surrounded by people who were swearing blind a A Ghost Is Born is their best album. wtf? :D
Prefer it to the last two anyway. I can see why many find it dull but I like the mellow mood on it.
It's subtle and charming. I really like it.
I think Wilco are at their very best when their songwriting is at its simplest to be honest. That includes YHF by the way, which is a masterpiece.
it was only really P4k who dissed it, making many afraid to admit their love... I think the problem album for most is Wilco (the album) which amounts to less than the sum of its often spectacular parts. Still, they've never made a truly bad album, just some less great ones
And I never read the P4K review. There's a few good tunes there, but definitely my least favourite (and the best song is Impossible Germany, which only really takes off live imo).
Absolutely factual and objective ranking of Wilco albums: Yankee>Summerteeth>Ghost>AM>Being There>Whole Love>Wilco>Sky Blue Sky.
All of Wilco's albums are worth listening to. There's gold amongst all of them.
'Sky Blue Sky' was as relentlessly dull as I remember and is still my least favourite of their albums. 'Wilco (The Album)' makes for a relatively pleasant listen in comparison, but sounds like the band is on autopilot at times. 'A.M.', while never one of their stronger albums, seemed weaker than I remember. The rest of their albums sounded as great as ever.
