What's the most accesible album by each of the mentioned bands?
Start with Crooked Rain, Crooked Rain or Brighten the Corners if you like messy alt.rock or start with the debut Slanted & Enchanted if you like really messy lo fi alt rock.
All their albums are wonderful with only Terror Twilight being slightly patchy but not really. Just pick one and listen to it till it hurts, they are worth every minute of your time.
ty segall - collab with white fence
jesus and mary chain - don't bother
thee oh sees - carrion crawler / the dream
pavement - don't bother
Psychocandy is the classic one, scruffy post-punk tunes with loadz ov fuzz. Quite close to Pilgrim/Surfer Rosa era Pixies, but nowhere near as wild. There's a few slower songs on there which are sort of forerunners to shoegaze.
Automatic and Darklands are both a bit more pop, so might be a better place to start if that's more your thing. In the long run I'd say pretty much all there released have merit to them if you get into the band, but I wouldn't recommend starting with the 90s stuff.
maybe less accessible than Darklands or Automatic, but much better than the latter and still fairly easy to get into. While still very noisey, I don't really find that Psychocandy is really *that* difficult to get into; so Darklands is a great album that's more accessible, but Psychocandy is why JAMC is a big deal. Honey's Dead is maybe a more accessible version of Psychocandy.
Most accessible: Twins/Darklands/Floating Coffin/Crooked Rain, Crooked Rain
All great albums too. I'd probably go with Carrion Crawler for Thee Oh Sees though.
TY SEGALL - the new double album. It's perfect for what he's been building up to over the last few albums.
JATMC - the debut. It's their classic.
THE OH SEES - I'd say Putrifiers II. It perfectly encapsulates Thee oh Sees weirdness and songwriting craft. It's better for easing you into other albums, like Carrion Crawler.
PAVEMENT - Brighten the Corners. Wowwee is too long, Slanted too difficult and Crooked too. I dunno. I think Brighten the Corners will be a better intro than Brighten.
Have fun! These are all good bands to get into.
Second this advice on the new album. I think it's his final realisation of hsi potential, album-wise and it's the most accessible too.
I feel that the best way to listen to their music is to start at Slanted and Enchanted and go chronologically from there, as each album is equally as brilliant.
Playing THAT LONDON
in THIS VENUE
on A ROAD
quite like the chronological suggestion for pavement, but if not then crooked rain.
ty segall collaboration with white fence (called hair) is what converted me, but if you like music thats scuzzy and a little more aggro then do slaughterhouse (ty segall band).
thee oh sees is an impossible answer. however i dont want to go on and on so ill just say floating coffin (or carrion crawler if you tend to like stuff on the aggro end of the spectrum).
and i haven't ever listened to JAMC in any real way.
Ty Segall: Twins
Thee Oh Sees: Floating Coffin or Carrion Crawler
Pavement: Brighten the Corners
