you won a few years back, why do you keep getting so defensive? it's over
Imagine upselling Haim.
others need to suffer as I have suffered, and bear witness to the Light as I have borne witness
ho is potimits?
Now it's a case of "how dare you like something different, come and lie down in the gutter with us."
Popism is all about being willing to like anything if it's interesting and exciting, without any preconceived notions of authenticity or worthiness or the canon.
It's the rockists who are prescriptive and exclusionary.
*enjoys a pop song with a blistering guitar solo*
The first two are about an approach; the second two are about style.
im appreciating the technical virtuosity of the guitar solo, which is DISGUSTINGLY ROCKIST
Saying that all guitar solos, especially technically virtuous ones are inherently more worthy than pop songs would be rockist.
im just into how difficult it would be to play
a technically virtuous guitar sola is the highest form of human acheivement
But populism (and maybe therefore popism) encourages homogeny
Not saying rock or rnb or whatever doesn't
but popism isn't about loving pop music and rockism isn't about loving rock music.
There does seem to have been a shift amongst those that would respond to being called poptimists to embracing exciting ideas across the genres and thumbing the nose at ill-informed, pre-conceived notions (a battle which, thankfully, has been largely won), and these strange people you find now who seem to use the banner to avoid art that might require some kind of effort or interrogation - your standard inverted-snob dullard, essentially. You're right that those people might be better described as rockists, but most rock fans don't have bugs up their arse to quite the extent as yer pseudo-indie Taylor Swift or Justin Timberlake fans.
this is why there's just no reasoning with idiots like you
Certainly on here, the people who identify as popists (as opposed to people who just like pop music and would never listen to anything else anyway) are more likely to also be the ones going to noise nights or jazz-improv or something like that.
DiS is fairly free of that kind of nonsense: can't say I agree with them all, but the pop fans on here argue their case with intelligence and honest interest.
There is very much a branch of person who would have been going mad about yer big P4K bands (AnCo, Bon Iver etc. - not to comment one way or other about them as acts) a few years ago now who seems to spend their time hyperventilating on that home of the reasoned opinion known as Twitter about the latest press release from whatever mega-corp Pop Star(TM) in a a weird kind of fawning worship, that I think is easily observable.
And just so we're clear: some pop music is great, some's shite. You know, like everything else.
Like AnCo myself, but won't disagree with you on the general idea.
they people who went mad for the big P4K bands were transitory and 'shallow'?
Or maybe they just grew up?
surprised you're linking to it.
+ no one calls themselves a poptimist. i think there are just lots of people who also like modern pop music as well as other music. for some reason people think they did a different slang term
+ pop music is just whatever is popular at a time, not a particular style of music
+ historically, lots of important and great records have been 'pop music'. the beach boys were pop music. donna summer was pop music. omd were pop music. kate bush, pulp, the talking heads.
+ pop music is still an industry, and so there is still a critique to be made. but it's not because the music is rubbish - it's a critique against exploitation and appropriation.
it's not the liking all music, it's the knee-jerk defensiveness
We could perhaps do with a moratorium on that dread phrase 'it's just good pop music!'
but as soon as I'm done listening to Rachel Stevens 2005 album 'Come And Get It' I feel obliged to tell you all to check it out and that if you dismiss it as POPpy cock to call you elitist pricks who only listen to cool music like The Radioheads. #Poptimistic
There was only one poptimist, and he — sadly — is no more:
