i really like 'raetj%b8 (dikoteq edition)'
love rhubarb and fingerbib though
or To Cure a Weakling Child
also Fenix Funk 5
idk about that one. feels like it's just a bit *too* glitchy for me, and that little beep beep bloop bit gets annoying. idk man
Special mentions to On, Flim and Equ.in/ox for me as well
Reminds me of Metroid Prime for some reason.
To Cure A Weakling Child
Its an obvious choice, but it is the song that shows what Aphex Twin does perfectly, and it's perfect.
Think I prefer this to the original.
one I used to often put on mixtapes back in the day
Cock / Version10
Start As You Mean To Go On
and out came the idiots?
for me: Windowlicker, Girl/Boy Song, Funny Little Man, Xtal and Tha
shout out to Digeridoo though.
You know Jarvis Cocker made the video for that one?
And they are pieces of music rather than 'songs' with the exception of his two most memorable tracks Come To Daddy and Windowlicker. Almost crazy to think those two tracks penetrated the Top 40 in '97 and '99 respectively. Truth is if have a listen to an album of his I generally have no idea what track is playing. I think he makes tracks with hard to recall names as the music is what really matters?
Didn't he do a DJ set in the late 90's and just play sandpaper (on the decks)? In ways he's taking the piss. In ways he's a genius. In a few 100 years time he'll probably be regarded as an electronic classical artist?
from December 1997. It features an article 'Jock On His Box' which is DJ's citing their favourite tracks in their record box. Usually that was filled with Frankie Knuckles, standard House fare, etc. It's the only copy of MW I have kept as his selections are so off the wall.
Eric Satie - CD Promo Box (early last century piano)
Oliver Messian - Complete Works (similar to above)
Derrick May - The Dance
808 State - New Build
R.U. Manic - Automation (hardcore rave)
Stockhausen - Songs Of The Youth's (50's mysterious sounds, cites it as "probably my favourite record ever")
A Guy Called Gerald - Hot Lemonade
Todd Dockstadder - All Tracks (60's music with no beats, "it pisses over any record of the last 20 years, if I was on a desert island I'd rather have one of his tracks than 100,000 other records)
Debussy - Complete Piano Works
K7 - Acid
His selections and quotes make up his sound to an extent. It's a rare insight..
used to play that on repeat in the art room at school
Definite fave, then:
SAW II Tracks 1 & 3
Crying in your Face
Rushup I Bank 12
To Cure a Weakling Child (Contour Regard)
Iz-Us is still impossibly sublime 17 years later.
Much love for:
Probably more but those're what comes to mind. That and I can't actually remember 95% of his track names.
plus Windowlicker, Xtal and Heliosphan
I always thought his piano tracks were beautiful too
