New LP out October 6/7, 2014!
Sounds like it won't be as blissful as Until the Quiet Comes, expecting a return to his harsher more crazier Los Angeles / Cosmogramma type stuff. Until the Quiet Comes was criminally underrated imo.
Until the Quiet Comes was good, but lowkey and, to be honest, weaker and less ground breaking than LA or Cosmogramma.
'You're Dead!' immediately sounds like it'll be more in your face.
WHAT A FUCKING ALBUM
need to give Until the Quiet Comes a decent go - will listen later. Artwork for the promos and stuff of the new album is extremely cool.
Until the Quiet Comes was one of my albums of the year that year. Such a great run of albums so hoping it continues.
Hope his UK tour extends past a London festival and the Warehouse Project this time, desperate to see him.
I'm resigned to him never playing Birmingham though :(
not sure I can be fucked going to warehouse project if he's playing there again.
there must be an audience there?
this could be good though
having only heard Los Angeles before.
This is phenomenal.
it was a gateway to some incredible music for me which makes it even more important. Have been deliberating getting the beautiful album art tattooed on me for a few years now.
I'm not on the windup either - the album is old enough now that you know you're not going to go off it, plus that would be some sweet inl tbh tbf.
would bleed and look a bit poo
...and have it maintained periodically then there's no reason that a tattoo shouldn't stay looking fresh for many decades.
Would have been slightly less worse without the exclamation mark.
A wonderful title
I seem to remember him saying somewhere that there was quite a 'prog' influence over this album. I can certainly see how could fit that sort of thing into his general style and that.
but this keeps me interested
Just feels like someone's placed a random Kendrick 'One-Flow' Lamar verse over a fast-paced FlyLo track. Oh and there's the bass solo.
and every time I'm disappointed.
I mean, he somehow manages to create some great music with it, but he's far too talented to spend the peak of his career releasing various forms of this shit. Move on, man.
There's tons of people making generic instrumental hip-hop for stoners. Let flylo be jazz, bro.
First play of that new track I wasn't arsed but second time I was like yeeeeeee boiiiiii.
I just want him to be game changing in the context of a genre that someone actually cares about. Like if he'd have redefined what trap music was back in 2012 instead of releasing Until the Quiet Comes , I'd find it easier to stomach him jazz-fusioning around for another 80 minutes or so.
What really pisses me off is that I know I'm gonna lap it up anyway.
but if you went to his shows on DJ sets, you'll know he was on that shit. I reckon he's the kind of producer that could have chopped it up and spewed it out as something entirely new and beautiful before it had reached saturation or even a wide audience yet. It's just one example really where he could take a shot at something new. Releasing the avant-jazz of UTQC actually seemed like a bit of an easy option really, and in the end, no one particularly cared about it.
it's way more of a party live
it gets really fucking stale after about an hour. That music is great but it's like really sugary sweets or something; amazing and energetic at the start and then you just feel sick after a bit.
I've always had a great time but it's nowhere near as fulfilling as one of his records. I think he knows he's never going to be an incredible trap producer or whatever because it's not what he's good at. Trap is raw and ragged, FlyLo is all about precision and technique. He's a jazz guy at heart and he always will be.
Sometimes I'm like 'oh yeah maybe I do like Cosmogramma' and then Thundercat comes in doing some sub-Flea fretwanking bass solo shite and I have to turn it off.
It's fine though cos I just put on his Lil Wayne remixes after that and everything's alright again.
too much jazz and funk hate in this thread
Best thing FlyLo has been involved in since Los Angeles
I'm all about the jazz, me.
Also a pretty big jazz and funk fan, if not quite an aficionado. But I'm kinda hooked on novelty and musicians pushing themselves in new directions. Cosmogramma pretty much blew me away as a follow up to LA, even though I prefer LA in hindsight. At that point it seemed like he could go all kinds of directions, but instead he seems to have settled into a groove, and I'm a little frustrated by that. I'd prefer him to be schizophrenic than simply avant-garde.
Anyway, imma shut up before I've actually heard the album. It'll probably be great.
It's way more interesting than his trap stuff.
He's good at it, just needs to do more live shows where he has a band with him.
The boxset comes with the instrumentals so I'm happy either way plus the visuals look banging so far. The Herbie Hancock is stellar too.
One of his best tracks yet
im really excited for you're dead!
Only 200 tickets apparently, so unsure if I'll get in, but going to give it a shot.
First impressions were that's it's really really good. It's sort of what I wanted Cosmogramma to be in terms of a jazz/hip hop hybrid, with a fair amount of prog thrown in especially early on. Whole albums flows together so it was really quite hard to pick out tracks except for at the end when there were a few more breaks in the music. Also the track with Snoop is absolutely brilliant and sort of throws a curveball compared to the music that's been before it on the record. Last couple of tracks are really really good as well, wonderful end to the album. Very excited to hear it again and let it sink in a bit more.
Bit of a weird affair in terms of venue choice; I haven't been to Plastic People before but it was absolutely tiny and the sound quality was average at best. Bit of a shame really as I felt like quite a lot of the nuance of the record was lost in the playthrough, especially in the hard jazz breaks. Also some bellends infront of me decided to spend the whole time talking which sort of defeated the point of them being there.
I tried to listen to it once but had to turn it off because i thought it was such a peice shit. haven't listened to it since. probably should though, since I like cosmogramma
it's a great album
wish i'd heard about this listening party but I'm gonna see him in November, I think it's the only part of his tour in Europe
blows away kendricks own release
imagine a kendrick lamar album produced fully by flylo
Basically a mix of that and Cosmogramma, which is perfect, can't complain really. The production values are incredible, make sure you listen to this with decent headphones/speakers
I think capping it at 38 minutes was very sensible. It's still a big jazz mess, but a manageable one. Far more exciting and distinctive than UtQC to my ears and that Kendrick song makes much more sense when its swept up in the album. As a 'single', it's hard not to hear it and think of it as a FlyLo-produced Kendrick song.
Disagree at your peril!
nowt mindblowing though. do agree that it's a slightly better executed version of UTQC.
but I think it sags in the middle a bit and little of that portion sticks out. Maybe if they spread out the vocal tracks a bit more evenly.
it'll probably be a grower, though.
I think this album is awesome.
thought it was good but that it didnt really satisfyingly hang together on the first few listens. listened to it tons the last few days and changed my mind big time. opening few tracks are samey and make me feel almost frustrated, then the kendrick track comes and it sounds amazing (and in isolation i thought 'meh'). the middle stretch from about track 8 to ~13 is as good as any he's done before. coronus the terminator followed by siren song is so fucking good.
its a step up from until the quiet comes, which i liked a fair bit, but it was an album limited in scope imo. it was enjoyable but kinda safe for him at that point. this is a lot more ambitious and i find new things popping out to me on every listen. i don't really know how hes gonna perform this stuff live but im very excited to see him next month.
I suggest you get the box set if you can, you get an instrumental double LP of alternative mixes.
