Pile o' shite.
I spent Saturday listening to Pinkerton a couple of times to remind myself how important to me that record was.
And what I love, is that the shine still hasn't been taken off by the tsunami of shit that's come since after Green/couple tracks on Maladroit. it's still a perfect record.
when the lyrics/theme is so, so awful
Think there's some bangers on there but dude's lyrics have always been patchy at best and dire at worst.
I still think pinkerton is my favourite album even though I don't listen to it much any more. My favourite parts of songs tend to be those moments of extra intensity and pinkerton is packed full of them, a cracked vocal here, burst of feedback there, smashing the hi-hat, little unexpected flourishes. I think musically it is really strong, its not the usual chugging power chords, it seems more composed than that or something.
I think there are a few regrettable lyrics here and there, but overall they are pretty good made better by the delivery, the theme seems to me to be of a flawed confused anxious person not sure what they want from life and thats very relatable for many people.
Or rather for a certain sort of heart-aching guy at that time and then they never lose love for it. By the time I heard it I was older and no longer emo about women and I just found it very dull compared to the Blue album.
I think it is very slightly more complex than that, it doesn't just cover standard can't get the girl unrequited love territory, but also being torn between commitment and carefree life, bad relationships vs loneliness, hurting people. it's emo about women, but in a suprising variety of ways, it an immature but struggling for maturity.
Even at their Make Believe/Raditude nadir, they still had Rivers' gift for hooks. This is just soooo bland.
its just not nearly as good as the material they are apeing
like sub-OkGo bad
I love OK Go and would stand up for pretty much everything they've done, audio and visual.
Whereas I love Weezer but this new song is deeply embarrassing.
Melodies are tight, nice production, plenty of hooks. Silly idea for a theme though which I guess ultimately lets it down.
Agree with all this. Their lyrics have been pretty silly for the last 10 or 15 years so that bit is no surprise.
I like the album cover art
i'm not a massive follower but pretty much everything i've heard afterwards has been shite. but shite in a way that i'd have to question whether a band putting out those kind of songs have the ability to write a good one.
I read a few interviews back in the day where rivers said that he was mortifyingly embarrassed by pinkerton, saying it was like getting really drunk at a party and being sick everywhere, it felt cathartic at the time but afterwards he felt hugely embarrassed by it and deeply regretted it.
Around the same time talked about how he was studying rock music (like nirvana and oasis songs) to come up with the perfect song formula. Think the songs on the green album are pretty formulaic, then maladroit took it even further, if I remember correctly they just had loads of fragments and used a lot of feedback from the weezer forums to shape that album, I stopped caring after that (though thought make believe was better than those two albums). I think all of this does point to the often suggested theory that rivers is just unwilling to invest any of himself in his music anymore.
They really sound like they just couldn't give a fuck any more.
I'm just not going to bother listening to this. This is Weezer's Revenge of the Sith for me. Dunzo.
why are people still surprised? it seems that every album they make there's murmurings of a return to the old days, one of the band memebrs will mention it and everyone gets excited then it turns out to be utter dross
the last proper album (Hurley, not the Death To False Metal rarities thing) was actually very decent.
Where's My Sex
lyrics actually based on his baby trying to ask where her socks was and said sex instead... not actually about sex. I thought Hurley was a decent album.
Mom made my sex
She knitted it with her hands
A family tradition
Going back to the caveman days
They were walking around in a haze
Until they figured it out
And they said, “gosh dang, this is great!”
But now I’m like a prehistoric screwball
Walking ‘round with no sex at all
were co-written by someone from outside the band. Everyone from Desmond Child to Linda Perry to Ryan Adams to the guy from Semisonic to the fucking bass player from No Doubt. Rivers has long lost his chops as a songwriter and he knows it :(
I mean ofc it's pretty stupid, but its kinda fun.
haha people saying it's not that bad
Had to turn it off. Oh dear
Is Buddy Holly and the bit in an Allo Darlin song where she sings about singing her favourite Weezer song and sings a bit of it. And I quite liked this song.
if it was played by the band from Doug
the distinction is important.
two tracks here, they are much better than the weezer single
you're all horrible people who deserve shit weezer records.
And yes they are both way better than the Weezer single, not that that is any great achievement.
I have to mentally try and block out the memory of all the shit they've put out in the last 10 years.
