Which album do you like more?
It is great from start to finish, Unknown Pleasures seems to dip a little in places.
the music on both albums is evocative and intense, and both seem to have had immeasurable influences on a lot of music (and I'm pretty sure the tVU&N was an influence on UP, so they're kinda linked in that sense). Lots of musicians cite those albums as influences and there is that famous Brian Eno quote: "while the first Velvet Underground album may have sold only 30,000 copies in its early years, everyone who bought one of those 30,000 copies started a band." Similar statement could be made about Unknown Pleasures, commonly considered the birth of alternative rock.
but why are you....ah, fuck it, can't be arsed. carry on.
The Stooges, Captain Beefheart and many more were making records that'd be considered 'alternative rock' later on as far back as the sixties, Unknown Pleasures is fantastic but it didn't invent a genre.
Not a fan of VU's music really.
But the first album is quite good after about one hundred listens and you can see how it influenced Joy Division and stuff.
for what it's worth: Closer > Unknown Pleasures
but Closer's cover is still great and the music is much stronger overall.
The second half of Closer is very, very good, and it clicked with me instantly.
Unknown Pleasures took a lot longer to click. I still don't like bits of it towards the end but nothing beats the first 5 tracks.
I love those albums, but they need to never be talked about ever again by anyone.
make a list of your top 100 records
don't listen to them again for a few years.
with a few tracks that also do my head in. But Unknown Pleasures. Because "There she goes again.. you better hit her" is a bit problematic, a slippery slope to Robin Thicke.
Let's see where Unknown Pleasures sits in 30 more years. My guess: all but forgotten, except for "the dead guy".
