System Of A Down

midnightpunk [Edit] [Delete] 33 replies 22:05, 6 July '14

Totally forgot they existed until a random YouTube meander just. This song hold up very well. 200m hits, I never thought they were that popular!

  • Find them comical, which is not what they were going for

    confrontedbybears | 6 Jul '14, 22:55 | X
    • nah man

it;s defo one of the things they were going for.

      they seem like good lads.

      codpieceface @confrontedbybears | 6 Jul '14, 23:42 | X
      • Not convinced they are

To quote a Pitchfork review discussing the terrible lyrics "At some point, the words just become unintentional comedy. At their best, they're nonsensical and garbled; at their worst, they're full of forced rhymes, juvenile shock tactics, and failed intellectualisms."

        • so pitchfork didn't like the goofy pop metal band aftr all<?

not saying yer man serj is cat stevens or owt but they're definitely self-aware in their silliness, it's not even up for question.

          • They gave the albums reviewed 7.1 and 7.9

The reviewer simply had a low opinion of the lyrics.

    • this sounds like someone annoyed that they don't get the joke

      justanothersheeldz @confrontedbybears | 7 Jul '14, 07:37 | X
      • This sounds like someone who doesn't know what the word annoyed means

        confrontedbybears @justanothersheeldz | 7 Jul '14, 12:54 | X
        • you're wrong

          on both counts.

          • I may or may not be wrong about System Of A Down

But it doesn't annoy me in the slightest, so you are wrong on that one.

  • Mesmerize is a fucking brilliant album. One of those wonderful bands who genuinely sound like no-one else.

    • Mesmerize

is one of the most thrilling rock albums I've ever heard. Great band and I think you have to be particularly mean-spirited not to find them entertaining

      ThirstyDog @Si_Badvibes | 7 Jul '14, 08:17 | X
  • are you people fucking serious

Mezmerize is one of the worst pieces of shit ever made. I genuinely put it on to laugh at. That Radio/Video song is inexplicable, Cigaro has lines about their cocks and I can't even remember the title of that gonorrhea gorgonzola one but that's unspeakably bad too.

    TheKennedyCurse | 7 Jul '14, 08:55 | X
    • I hope

the joy of hearing a man screaming "MY COCK IS MUCH BIGGER THAN YOURS!!!" on top of crunching speed metal riffs never wears off.

    • I thought Mesemerize/Hypnotize were potentially great albums

Let down by letting Daron Malakian take too much of the spotlight on them. Awesome guitarist, but his singing isn't a patch on Serj's, and most of the naff lyrics seem to be his. Their politics are simplistic and I think they're better when the lyrics are more tongue-in-cheek (Sugar, etc.), but their heart's in the right place and if it's a stepping stone for kids to get into more involved stuff, fair enough. Never been able to fault them musically though.

      in_limbo @TheKennedyCurse | 7 Jul '14, 10:50 | X
      • ^this

Daron went mad with power and seemed to think he had something to say. He then penned the worst set of lyrics the world has ever seen in Lonely Day and insisted on singing it with his wafer thin nasal twat of a voice. Just look at this mess:

        Such a lonely day
        And it's mine
The most loneliest day of my life

        Such a lonely day
        Should be banned
        It's a day that I can't stand

The most loneliest day of my life
The most loneliest day of my life

        Such a lonely day
        Shouldn't exist
        It's a day that I'll never miss
        Such a lonely day
        And it's mine
The most loneliest day of my life

And if you go, I wanna go with you
And if you die, I wanna die with you

Take your hand and walk away

The most loneliest day of my life
The most loneliest day of my life
The most loneliest day of my life
        Life

        Such a lonely day
        And it's mine
        It's a day that I'm glad I survived

        • It's like they had their two best albums there

then Daron had to cover it in clumps of his own syphilitic jizz. I'm sure it must have contributed to Serj's decision to go solo, as though he misses the band's power on his own, his lyrics are by and large fine.

          in_limbo @colossalhorse | 7 Jul '14, 12:03 | X
  • Well, I guess it's time to listen to Toxicity again!

They were (are??) such a fun band. Totally silly shit a lot of the time, but solid just the same.

    ThisTemporaryLife | 7 Jul '14, 09:52 | X
  • the bassist used their facebook page to try crowdfund for another band

last week, it went hilariously wrong with all the SOAD nuts going mental at him and then he posted a FUCK YOU type message

the lead singer dude has gone batso, makes terrible art & midi sounding lite jazz fusion music now whilst refusing to make new SOAD tunes

    Noblet | 7 Jul '14, 10:06 | X
    • Aye, saw this pop up

Thought it was a Crowdfund for a new SOAD album. Very confusing.

      valenci @Noblet | 7 Jul '14, 11:33 | X
    • yeah it's a shame really

Elect the Dead (which was released 7 years ago jfc) was actually alright but the more recent stuff is a little tedious.

      wewerewerewolvesonce @Noblet | 7 Jul '14, 15:23 | X
  • one of my favourite bands

amazing live and five great LPs, yes the lyrics are a bit tongue in cheek and easy to latch on to if you be a hater, but if you want a fun easily accessible metal act with riffs and hook lines to get stuck in your head for years then they be the best of what is / was around.

they manage to be both smart and stupid, at the same time.
