TWO QUESTIONS - Ramones and Island Records

wrightylew [Edit] [Delete] 13 replies 17:06, 5 October '05
1. I bought a Ramones compilation recently, but I found out its just a group of their 'Chrysalis' stuff (80's recordings I think).
I want to hear earlier stuff. What album doth you recommend? Anthology or an LP?

2. Is Island Records an indie label?

Island are owned by a major. I forget which - Universal, maybe?

Alex Kapranos says in an old NME (the one they edited), 'Its so good to see bands like Bloc Party and the Killers on indie labels...'.

I thought Island was a big 'un.

I dunno if Lizard King is an indie or not - I'm sure the wording on the CD is that it's (C) lizard king, licensed to island.

That seems to happen a lot recently - thinking of Hard Fi as well here, signed to Neccessary but licensed off to Atlantic.

Lizard King still technically is an "indie" even though they've now sold a large (if not entire) share of ownership to an american holding company.

The Killers are signed to Lizard King in the UK. They were signed here before being signed elsewhere. They are now signed to Island worldwide (excluding UK I assume).

Same story for The Bravery. They were first signed to Loog in the UK and to Universal worldwide.

Both Island and Loog are Universal labels. Island, as far as I'm aware, functions autonomously domestically as does Loog.

        1. Anthology - this.
        2. Pretty sure it's not.

Yeah, it's Universal, by way of Polygram, that own Island.

          1. Leave home re-issue with the live set as a bonus disc.
And the Rocket to Russia re-issue. Both worth having.
