by freakin' miles and miles. I wouldn't ever actively listen to U2. Whilst growing up everything pointed me in their direction but oh no - they are practically all that is wrong with music. Massive ego's - largely shit music. The Joshua Tree which is held up as their classic is dust ridden, self-important pomp with very little substance. By contrast RHCP initially were a unique band. Punk Funk that slotted into the skate genre by accident more than anything. Some very good material up until Californication and some decent songs after that also. A far more genuine band even if they smack of Cash Cow these days. The sight of Bono makes me feel sick. watch Flea perform or talk and you kinda get the feeling he is in it for the music and it's all he knows. Even the Atoms For Peace album is decent.
RHCP are, and have always been, pants.
U2 made some good music way back when.
Before that they were another collectable 80s band.
not really a big fan of either and I don't really have anything against them, but for the life of me, I really don't understand RHCP's longterm popularity. Some decent tracks here and there, but really, RHCP? I mean, that's the favorite band of a lot of people? It's almost on par with my friend's favorite band being Live.
I've never heard an entire U2 album, but I like what I've heard otherwise, though everything I've heard since 2000 or so has been terrible.
RHCP is something tolerable in small doses.
have the edge.
At least they were good fun at some point in their career.
What's worse: The Edge or Flea?
Bono not included as it's clearly the worst of all of them.
The Edge sounds quite cool until you see and hear him
and he told you his nickname was Flea, you probably wouldn't think much of it. Especially if he was short, like Flea himself. But if he said "People call me The Edge" you'd think he was the king of all the wankers, surely.
By The Way is the chorus Bono wishes he'd written.
as they were one of those bands that everyone at school worshipped, particularly when BtW came out. I hated school so for me it's U2 by default. It's U2 anyway on the basis of The Unforgettable Fire.
aren't really comparable.
Both started off fairly obscurely in the 80s, then became world-recognised titans of alternative rock in the late 80s/early 90s due to one or two massive-selling albums each with a string of hit singles, then they became really annoying and even more popular but much less good in the late 90s/00s.
U2 are better compared with Simple Minds or The Alarm.
U2 would be better compared to Simple Minds or The Alarm.
is that Flea's bass playing in Jane's Addiction's Jane Says live video from all those years ago makes that song untouchable. Possibly
"I think they are all Christians but doesn't it say in the bible that thou shall not worship anyone but the Messiah, and well, that Bongo thinks he is one."
cause they had John Frusciante. U2 they never had no John Frusciante.
and Freaky Styley was produced by George Clinton. Both pretty cool. U2's guitarist calls himself The Edge. Not so much.
Also, RHCP were alright for about five albums. U2 have always, always been shite
Whereas U2's bad stuff isn't really that bad.
but then Flea is in The Big Lebowski so that negates it all
Ever, under any circumstances at all.
would be better compared to Nirvana or the Beastie Boys. Not that they sound like either band but that middle ground is the area they occupied and why they are cooler and musically better have more kudos than U2.
U2 suffer beyond the music with that awful statesmanship nonsense they try to pull off. RHCP are straight up party monsters which sits well with their better, earlier material.
Anthony Kiedis is in Point Break. Flea is in The Big Lebowski. And they did that song from Beavis & Butt-head. U2 did that Spiderman musical atrocity, that Across The Universe atrocity, and wrote Goldeneeeeeeeye by Tina Tuner. Thus, RHCP are cooler.
Just comparing the music. Although wankers do make the best music.
With RHCP, there's a much bigger gap in quality between the best stuff & the worst.
Californication and Blood Sex Sugar Magik are both classic albums, U2 have never released anything as good as either of these.
The drummer is fine.
A Day With Out Me, October, 11 O'Clock Tick Tock, I Will Follow, Sunday Bloody Sunday, Electric Co., 40, Pride, A Sort Of Homecoming, Wire, The Unforgettable Fire, Seconds, Like A Song, Drowning Man, The Refugee, Surrender are all great songs from the earlier albums.
The Joshua Tree is a masterpiece for Me. They've had one or two decent songs since (The Fly, Desire, Numb, Discotheque) but nothing for a very long time now.
RHCP jumped the shark at Californication. Blood Sugar Sex Magik is easily their best album and it gets a listen from Me every now and again. Fight Like A Brave, Knock Me Down, Higher Ground are my favourites from the earlier stuff.
U2 over RHCP for Me, but both bands are now completely irrelevent to Me. I only listen to their older stuff and take no notice of new releases.
