Anyone else planning on getting this new three disc reissue?
it's fine, but I'm not sure I want three cds worth of the stuff
it could be like Nuggets, where the compilation was good, but you don't want endless re-releases of similar third rate stuff.
Looking at the other discs along with the big names there's a bunch of great stuff on there - Yeah Yeah Noh, McTells, Dentists, Pigbros, 14 Iced Bears, A Riot Of Colour, Nightingales, Meat Whiplash, King Of The Slums, Janitors. A few things I don't know, that I'll be interested to hear too.
I didn't know they were a C86 band. My bandmate was in them.
Presumably the band Karen O started before she decided to jack the job in and really give it a go...
& kind of fit in with Ron Johnson label stuff that was on that comp. Really any Brit band that Peel was playing in the mid-80's probably qualifies, & Pigbros were on his show a bunch.
Too young for when the tape first came out but utterly love this sort of music.
The new 3CD version is really great - the original tape is CD one and stands up well, the other two discs are full of other stuff from the same time. There are some well known things but loads of stuff that I've never heard of (and I was around and paying attention at the time)
There's a lot more from the 'shambling' Stump/Bogshed side of C86 than from the 'twee' side of things but that reflects the reality of the original tape (rather than it's inaccurate reputation).
I think this is a really interesting period of English music - the last time when 'indie' meant 'independent' in terms of distribution and also attitude rather than being some kind of phony genre. Not all of the music is great, but there are loads of bands that burned bright and short and are an example to the weak, careerist rubbish that forms a lot of modern 'alternative' music
